I served in the military, and there are just as many people in the military from the north and west as there are from the south.

Rural areas of the country are generally the same. Cities are also generally the same. There just happens to be a lot more rural area and population in the South than anywhere else. The upper Midwest absolutely contains more trashy rednecks than anywhere else though. Rural Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, etc. are fricking scary.
