And considering that LOSING in Atlanta could very possibly, in many cases, knock you out of the playoffs, it just seems to me that going to Atlanta is something many SEC playoff hopefuls would rather avoid.

The teams with the best records will play in the SEC championship game. The loser will be in the playoffs.

A first round bye to avoid injuries is a pretty big upside.

There is an upside. But there is just as much downside as upside.

Everything is so "strategic" now instead of just playing the damn game and enjoying the sport of football.

Much like all FCS teams on all (most) of our schedules.

Culturally, we have become manipulators at our core and it drives all these calculated decisions, rather than just honoring the spirit of competition.

True in politics as well, of course.

Caps, shirts and banners dude.

There's also tens of millions of $ in additional revenue that comes with that.

Only upside is they make it a 10 team play off and give the #1 and #2 seed auto bids into the semis.

Everyone else has to play a 1st and quarter round playoff game outside of #1 and #2 seed. That way the SEC champ has an actual benefit to playing in the conference championship game and winning. It makes no sense outside of that scenario.

And the two teams in the SECCG have to play a championship game.

Think of it as another 1st round playoff game, except the loser might still get to advance.

But overall, they're having to play the same amount of games as the non-bye teams.

The teams who are REALLY screwed are the ones who lose the championship games and have to still play the first round game. They end up playing an extra game more than even those qualifiers who didn't make the championship games. They'll have to play five games after the regular season instead of only four.

But you are going to start worrying about it since Nicky is no longer on the sidelines paying the refs, or, influencing the selection committee

It will be like having a first-round bye in the MLB postseason and watching it become irrelevant.

I don't see a scenario in the current conference format where a team makes the SECCG and is seeded lower that a team with a worse regular season record who didn't play.

In a situation where both will get the bye no matter what, the team in the championship game should still have an easier path.

There's a reason the conferences all ended the division format this season.

The SECCG needs to be dumped. These kids play enough games. With the playoffs expanded to 12 games, there really is no need for this.

I agree in principle, but they're mostly pretty well paid. That changes the calculus.

You really aren’t going to need to worry about it for a while as a UT fan.
