Sweet BBQ sauce is what the Texans use. It's ok for beef, but for pulled pork I prefer vinegar sauce and some hot slaw.

Dry rub only is my least favorite style, though. That’s not BBQ, that’s a glorified pork chop. A tasty pork chop it may be, but a pork chop nonetheless.
Some dry rubs maybe...but there are many that can stand on their own to the flavor of sauce. But I like the sauce worked into my pulled pork after it has been pulled.
To each his own.

Sweet? In Texas?
We use ketchup or tomato based mostly with salt, pepper (lots), cumin, chili powder, some sugar (brown usually), & maybe some onion powder or very very finely minced onion.

Was in Greenville a few years ago on business. They took me to some food truck that was supposed to be the BEST bbq. It was the type of place that ran out every day at 10:30 with people still queued up.
Nasty. It was served in a styrofoam cup. It was dry and stringy, yet still managed to be watery and flavorless.
