I am AU orange and blue, but the man could motivate and coach players and was a really good evaluator of talent. Like Bear said, you buy me the players and I'll coach 'em up.
He was also smart enough to see the writing on the wall with the portal and NIL rules.
You cannot coach the way he did with a bunch of paid mercenaries that have egos as big or bigger than his, and will take their ball and go home if they don't get their way. They don't give two shits about the school, they are there to play football and get paid, not to get an "education".

This thread is actually pretty damn funny. I enjoy this sort of back and forth bickering.
On a note germane to the conversation here, they do grant car notes to basically anyone now. It’s really not that far out of the galaxy to think that a Wendy’s employee could purchase a mid grade vehicle, or perhaps even a somewhat expensive one - especially if it is a full time employee. It’s probably like the housing bubble in ‘08 but much smaller in scale and less significant, so it won’t wreck the world economy if/when defaults sky rocket, and asset values crater.
Regardless of how Saban retained players, he developed them as well as anybody. People act like other teams didn’t also have a high proportion of blue chips — a lot of the top teams did. Saban just had a system where he got the most out his guys.

This has been my biggest complaint with NIL. I am all for paying players who perform. Which was the original intent of the. The guys whose jerseys are selling, or are in video games.
The fact a HS kid can make as much as a proven starter in college is just insane.
