Winning at Duke should be an autobid for the HOF.

I've never even though about doing this before ... but in this one case, I'll make this one exception. Because it is well done, a rarity for this site.

Good article. One point they brought out is Spurrier building a program. Duke and SCar are obvious but people forget about Florida. From 1986-1989 they were a 500 club.

Spurrier has already proven himself and will go down as one of the best SEC coaches ever.

But winning one title, even at South Carolina, by itself doesn't mean everything.

As Larry Coker and Gene Chizik proved, any coach can win one title.

Spurrier's past accomplishments (numerous SEC titls and a national title) are already impressive and another national title would simply add to that.

People talk about SC's winless year in '99, but didn't Florida suffer a winless year in 1980. or somewhere around there?

The only reason I remember something about that is because I remember hearing that in '80 when they came to Clemson and hired Charlie Pell that year and Danny Ford got to coach the taterheads in the bowl when Pell left.

UF had some outstanding teams under Pell and Hall...if you can overlook the kazillion infractions...which the NCAA didn't. After 1985 it pretty much went south till Spurrier in 90.

Well Pell cheated his arse off at Clemson too, but the year after he left they won a MNC, even though they got hit with major sanctions and committed some of the most egregious and blatant infractions in the history of NCAA football.

Pell was known for that - but still, look how he helped the programs where he went.

People quickly forget about the cheating ... although, today it is a fairly accepted assumption that if it were today Clemson would have been forced to vacate their '81 title. They should have been given the death penalty quite honestly.

Sanctions (and a LOT of them) are a bitch.

The thing that separates Spurrier from Saban, IMO, is where they coached. Spurrier has never coached at a college team that either had no competition instate, or was even the leading program instate until he made them the leader.

You can look at Saban's time at MSU to see how he would fare in Spurrier's shoes. At State he was in the shadow of UM and took an average team and made them only slightly better than average. If he had stayed there for as long as Spurrier has stayed at USC would they have continued to inch their way up on Michigan? Perhaps. But he bolted for the LSU before we could know.

USC has historically been the second level team in the state in regards to football, but Spurrier has currently reversed that situation. He took UF, arguably, the third best team in the state of Florida and made them the go-to destination for some of the best the Sunshine State produced. He won a conference title at Duke... Duke!! It could be argued that Duke isn't even in the top five football programs in NC.

If he could do this at schools that didn't have the tradition and inherent recruiting advantages of an Alabama or LSU, do you honestly think he wouldn't be able to duplicate (or better...) Saban's success given those advantages?

I already believe he's better than Saban. IF he were to win National Title at USC then the argument becomes "Spurrier or Bryant", with Saban out of the conversation.
