If Lane Kiffin had stayed at Tennessee, they'd be competing yearly for SEC titles.

They'd be on probation. He needed Camp Saban bad...and we needed him at the time.

Maybe.

But he was young and dumb at that time and he may have ended up like Hugh Freeze if he didn't have the experience he had at USC being hammered by the NCAA.

I call bullshite.

Kiffin is an overrated spoiled brat.

Had Mike Hamilton's stupid arse hired Gary Patterson or Brian Kelly we would not be where we are at.

Kelly wanted the job. Patterson thought he had it. Kiffin blew smoke up Hamilton's stupid arse about how good he was at fund raising.

Kiffin has done NOTHING in coaching. Fired by the Raiders. One year at UT that brought the NCAA sniffing around. Fired on the tarmac by USC. Won a few games at Podunk U in Florida.

Nah. Kiffen needed to mature as a HBC (still remains to be seen if this has occurred) and there was nothing at UT which would have fostered that process. He needed to experience the rejection and, ultimately, the redemption.

Working under Saban really helped Lane a lot, but maybe not as much as being shitcanned on the tarmac by USC.

Lane at UT would have ended badly, for all parties. IMO, of course.

Greater or lesser than the field of Dooley, Jones, Schiano and Pruitt?

Basketball and football would just now be recovering from the NCAA setting up shop.

All you're missing is 3 years of finishing school at the University of ALABAMA. USC is a good example of where Kiffin was heading.

Good question. I don't think Lane would have had a losing season, per se, but Lane would have never reached the heights that the OP seems to believe here.

Better than Dooley, on par with Jones, and would have possibly flamed out harder than Pruitt with recruiting improprieties....

Shiano is just a "what if" that I won't entertain, though I think Shiano would have probably done well. I get why UT fans troll others now by bringing him up at Rutgers, but no one really knows what his ceiling would have been. Would have been better than Jones, probably.

Anyway, Heupel will be a great coach if he can get that recruiting in-line, and that defense straightened out. A good UT is good for all of us, and I am rooting for him.
