9 game conference schedule is about money.
With unbalanced schedules, you have to have the championship game to actually pick a conference champion.
Otherwise a mediocre team can luck into a garbage schedule and win the championship without proving anything. (See A&M’s schedule this year, which almost proved this scenario).

9 game conference schedule means most teams will have 2-3 losses when it comes time for the playoff committee to make their final decisions. If the committee is going to leave out a 3-loss conference runner up in this scenario, the SEC will eliminate the SECCG.
ETA: None of our school ADs want Bama to be left out of the playoff field, because they know that can be them in future years. I can guarantee you that.

After the product Alabama put on the field, they should be left out whether they played in the SECCG or not. No Alabama fan can honestly say we are a playoff team. The game tonight just exposed us more.
