Can't speak for all Auburn folks- but for me, it was NYD 2020. We have a good gameplan and beat Bama, then completely crap the bed against a hapless Minnesota team. At that point, I knew that Gus was an 8-4/7-5 coach, and that's all he'd ever be.

It seems crazy. 2013 was a great year for Auburn. It seems like Gus just couldn't change his offense, or at the very least did not make sure to have the athletes to run his offense. He had an effective offense in 2013, but didn't seem to understand his offense required a certain kind of player for it to be successful.

I think Nick Marshall is extremely underrated in AU history. And that line with a bruising RB- it was lightning in a bottle. If you look back at AU games under Gus, we rarely had any comebacks. He just couldn't adjust. And he recruited what was supposedly top 15 level classes. He just couldn't develop anyone.
Name one AU QB that started at AU that got better under Gus. I'll hang up and listen. NM got fundamentals elsewhere, as did Cam.

Who selected UGa #1 in 1942? What was their record?

Marshall did improve as a passer under Gus, but he was the exception rather than the rule and it may not have been on Gus so much as him developing on his own as he eased back into QB over time.

Just a refresher...

- Auburn is 11-29 vs Georgia, LSU, and Alabama since 2008

- Auburn is 3-13 over their last 16 vs Georgia

- Auburn is 1-7 over their last 8 vs Georgia

- Auburn hasn't beat Georgia outside of Jordan-Hare in
16 years, and it will be 17 years before they get
another chance
• In those 8 games outside of JH, Auburn outscored
Georgia 52-44 in the 1st quarter
• But after the 1st quarter, Auburn was outscored
206-36
- Auburn hasn't had a non-transfer QB drafted in 16 years

- Auburn paid Gus big money for a 4-loss season'

- Auburn lost to UCF

Everyone that ever gave us shite for sending Gus packing need only look at this data. It sucks but it's stone cold fact.

The great success that Kirby is having in recruiting perhaps is hurting AU since they depend much on Georgia talent. Nick is also signing more state of Alabama guys. Harsin has his work cutout for him.

He's got some SEC area recruiters in Friend/Bobo/Williams/Mason, etc.

I think the hurdle will be AU has to prove they can develop players, field a competitive team that can go toe to toe with UGA/Bama/LSU/FL/aTm in the conference and that they can get players into the early rounds of the draft. It's just going to take some time to build the foundation.

1966 Alabama is one of the greatest screwjobs in the history of sports. Right up there with the 1972 Olympics USA Basketball team.

He just couldn't adjust.

That's my take, too. Seems he would not allow his coordinators the freedom to make adjustments, or wanted to keep his own input on what was going one. Trying to communicate with coaches in the box, on the field etc was just too much. It slowed communications and adjustments to a crawl. Like I said. Just my opinion.

Actually, I think most of his classes were top 10. It seemed as if he got talented QBs but they didn't seem to fit his system, and he couldn't develop them.

Maybe, maybe not. I mean, Marshall was a DB at Georgia, and then he played QB for one year (I think) in Jr. College. That's not much time to get a kid fundamentally sound. I'd have to give him at least a LITTLE credit for Marshall. The rest, though?

Just a refresher...

Georgia has never won a National Championship in the BCS or post BCS era. Their last title came in 1980.

Auburn won the National Championship in 2010 and played for another in 2013.
