I mean you may have wemt to more meaningless bowls but are those not the biggest bowl games played every year? And we've wemt to the same number of major bowls? I figured that would be a good measure of how our programs stack up

Not really. Fiesta only got big in the 80s, Peach was like 5th in the SEC selection order until the playoff started (Citrus and Outback were both bigger), etc.
