re: I do wonder, though, why Rees would leave a good Notre Dame team to take the same position

You say that Kiffin is overrated, but your school tried to hire him as HC just months ago.
my school hired Bryan Harsin. Wanting to hire kiffin doesn't give him a ringing endorsement. He is best known as a twitter troll........not for his HC ability.

Better opportunity to win National Championship, ground floor learning experience from Coach Saban. Smart move on his part

at Alabama.
Yeah, Alabama has been better than Notre Dame lately, but it's a tougher conference, not to mention that he played at Notre Dame, though I don't think that's as big a deal to the coaches unless it's as head coach.
Wonder why did Kelly leave Notre Dame? Same thing is happening to Notre Dame OC is taking an OC job at Alabama which is better than being at Notre Dame.

Also, if Alabama wins a NC, it'll be because Saban is a great coach.
But if they don't win a NC, it'll all be Rees' fault.

Wtf are you talking about? Bama fans gushed constantly about Sark, Kiffin, Pruitt, & Kirby. If Rees performs, he'll get all the credit he deserves.

He was about to get fired and old man Saban saved his arse. Notre Dame AD was probably laughing his arse off when he heard the news.

Lol.
Every comment I see here says "Kirby copied the GOAT". Doesn't seem like they give him much credit.

Doug Nussmeir - national title
Jim McElwain - 2 national titles
Lane Kiffin - national title
Brian DaBoll - national title
Steve Sarkisian -national title
O'Brien- processed because no national title

as overrated as they come.
Lane won an SEC championship and got into CFP with BLAKE SIMMS at QB and followed that up with a natty the next year with JAKE COKER at QB. Overrated my arse, not at Alabama. In comparison, name any Auburn OC any time who had back to back years like rhat. I'll hang up and listen.

Kirby did copy Saban's formula. He's currently doing it better than Saban himself.
I dont know what that has to do with Bama fans not giving their coaches any credit.

so you go back to the 80's?
Dye was the last half-consistent coach Auburn had. Practically no non-Auburn fans could name any coordinators from Auburn aside from Malzahn and Muschamp since the 80s.

Because the HC will fail at ND and he has a better shot to learn under Saban and take over ND when the job is open in a couple years.

I heard this on something I was listening to. Said ND will have a harder time competing for NIL money compared to the top schools in the SEC and other conferences.
ND has no issue competing on NIL, and we'll out bid every school in the SEC including Alabama for the right kid. We're one of the richest schools in all of America with one of the richest alumni bases. Public schools from poor bottom tier states won't compete with us (or USC or Texas) in the long run for NIL dollars.
Our philosophy seems to be a bit different to this point: we pay heavier on retainers and college-proven talent than enticing high school talent. We'll see what strategy wins out long run.
As far as Rees goes, I think he's quite a gifted play caller, but he has his flaws. It is a no brainer to go work for a guy like Saban rather than an unproven leader like Freeman. However; he needs an adult over his shoulder a lot of the time to buffer him from his worst instincts. His ceilings are very high, and his floors are very low: we lost to fricking Marshall and Stanford mostly because of him and gained exactly 1 yard in the second half against Navy because of him.
He will have access to WR and RB talent that he would have never sniffed at ND, but he had better line and better TE talent than he will ever have at Alabama. There isn't a program in America that can compete with the All Pro, Pro Bowl, and draft pick talent that ND has produced up front (including TE) over the last decade, even Alabama.
So we'll see.
Edit: Also, if LSU fans are laughing, I'd rather have Rees than motherfricking Denbrock 10 times out of 10. What a bunch of clowns that you think that shite will work out.

You may have a point with TE, but not necessarily OL. Alabama has had more OL drafted than any other program over the last decade. Note the ESPN article confirming this that I am linking.

Kevin Steele
Derek Mason
Gene Chizik
Those are guys that were not only head coaches, but also guys that had multiple stops in the SEC.
Gene Chizik at Auburn twice, Kevin Steele at Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee and LSU, and Derek Mason at Vandy and Auburn.

”claiming" somebody is from a certain "coaches tree", because they stopped in for a few years and are having success, is absurd.
The Nick Saban “coaching tree” is way overblown.

We couldn't give a shite. We have the GOAT.

Auburn had back to back years of great offense in 2013 and 2014.
Auburn PPG
2013: 39.5
2014: 35.5
Alabama PPG
2013: 38.2
2014: 36.9

he did that as an OC, not a HC. There is a huge difference in the two......see Will Muschamp.
