I can’t believe Jon Sumrall left Troy for Tulane.

Seems like a lateral move. Tulane might be a better job but not by that much. Just seems like he could have stayed at Troy and done pretty well and the SEC will come calling in a year or two. If I was Arky or Florida I may have made a move and hired him two weeks ago.

Napier only been at Florida for two seasons. Cut him some slack for a season or two more at least.

and Tulane is a better job than Troy so whatever.

Tulane is not a huge step up.

Hell three years ago most probably would have thought it was a step down.

Most coaches don't take a "huge step up."

It's actually fairly rare.

Fritz has really elevated Tulane, it's arguably one of the best G5 jobs right now, maybe UCF is better.

The AAC is better than the Sun Belt but not by a huge margin. He isn’t going to Tulane to get rich. Just seems like he could have hung out at Troy and kept winning until the SEC comes calling in a year or two. He is a pretty damn good coach so he will not be at Tulane long anyway.

AAC is on TV more than the Sun Belt, thus more high profile.

Tulane is already a good program so he just has to keep the wheels rolling for a few years and he'll have his pick of jobs in the Southeast (within reason).

At that point, he will have established that he can win in multiple places and he can get Tulane to a NY6 bowl potentially and really put himself on the map like Fritz did.

Much harder to make that jump from one job in the Sun Belt, it can be done (Napier) but will usually be a rebuild situation.

What SEC fanbase would be ok with hiring the coach from Troy?!?

There are a few SEC schools that will be hiring a coach next year unless a huge turnaround is made. I could easily see Sumrall at any one of those schools no matter where he was at after next season. He is getting a little tougher conference to play it but not by much. I’m sure he made a little more money but nothing compared to what an SEC team will pay later. I don’t know I just do not think I would wanna put my family through a move unless I was getting a way bigger opportunity out of the deal than what I had at Troy which he is not.

He was making about a million per at Troy, I've heard that he doubled that.

He will though.

Even if he only stays at Tulane a year, two good years at Troy and one good year at Tulane look much better than three good years at Troy, especially if he can sneak into a playoff appearance with that G5 auto bid.

I would think he would get more advantage staying at Troy another year and doing well than he would going and coaching 1 or 2 years at Tulane. People would notice more at Troy because he built that where at Tulane he will just be there a hot second. You can’t argue with making more money but some SEC, ACC, or Big 12 team will quadruple what Tulane is gonna pay him for one year. I think he is gonna be one of the hot names for big boy football teams in big boy conferences next year so I just do not see a huge advantage.

Tulane isnt P5 but still a good job. If the Stoops/A&M thing actually happened he would’ve been our hire.

When Stoops leaves for Iowa after Ferentz retires he’ll be our first call.

Maybe he is smart and wants to incrementally get better rather than trying to bite off more than he can chew currently.

The last Troy coach (Neal Brown) went straight to the Big 12, West Virginia.

He’s just wasting time until Stoops inevitably leaves in the middle of the night. He will be the first call when the UK job opens up.
