Unfortunately, this looks like a response thread now, but I was considering posing the question before that was posted. Basically, I was curious to see how tRant views WKU as a team and how different results would effect your view of Vanderbilt's team. Try to set aside your personal feelings about each possible outcome because some of them are just there for the sake of argument.

1) WKU dominates. Their offense runs wild while their defense makes Vandy fans start making sure Karl Dorrell is not again patrolling the sidelines. We again see QB cycling with McCrary and Freebeck being alternated and possibly even replaced by a 3rd QB (likely Shurmur but possibly Stankavage). The final score is something like 45-3.

2) Close WKU win. Vandy's offense is able to match WKU's output. Now, that could mean the Commodore defense shuts down WKU while the Hilltoppers return the favor or that both offenses go wild. Maybe each scenario means something different to you. Either way, Vanderbilt looks stable and functional. Obviously, the performance isn't great, but it's nowhere near the dumpster fire we saw last year. The QB position is not great, but plays to a C+ or B- grade. Basically, if you saw the UT-Vandy game last year, that's the kind of performance I'm thinking about except it's WKU and not UT.

3) Close Vandy win. It's the same scenario(s) as above except Mason and his squad do just enough to start 1-0.

4) Vandy controls the game. They look like a team who really gets it and is playing well. There are the typical first game dropped passes and a few extra penalties or missed assignments, but those mistakes are overshadowed by the on-field improvement. The big quesiton mark at QB grades out in the B+ range. The offensive and defensive schemes work moderately well and result in a comfortable finish in the neighborhood of 31-10.

5) Vandy obliterates WKU. Somehow, someway, this team has emerged from the ashes of last season and looks ready to take on the world. This game looks how many feel an SEC vs C-USA game should look. Quarterback play is at least a B+, and the rest of the offense carries whatever deficiencies exist to the point that it is not even worth discussing. Ralph Webb goes off and makes sure every football fan watching knows how legit he is. The schemes come off to perfection in all facets. Final in the range of 49-3 with Vanderbilt having called off the dogs near the start of the 4th.

This thread probably requires way too much critical thought, but I just want to see how people would react. It's interesting to see how some on here are predicting scenario 1 while others are more in the 2 to 3 range. I think one person even went more towards 4 in another thread.

I won't be shocked if Vanderbilt wins. I WILL be shocked if Vanderbilt just obliterates WKU. I wouldn't be convinced that they're a bowl-bound team, but I'd be convinced that Mason is a much better coach than we've given him credit for.

I think it will either be 2 or 3 and either way I think Vandy will be a better team than last year but I don't think they'll make a bowl game regardless of the outcome of the game.

My expectations are pretty in line with that. I think Vandy wins. It might even be by 10 or so if the breaks go our way. A bowl definitely would still feel like a stretch, but I could see us heading to Knoxville 5-6 in that scenario.

Thanks for the legitimate responses. I honestly expected a lot of Rant nonsense.

Would not prefer Vanderbilt playing with a bowl game for them on the line. Last year proved that, like many rivalry games, it doesn't matter what one team or the other may look like on paper. It's often a dogfight.

I still remember struggling against those Woody Widenhofer teams with Peyton fricking Manning under center

I will be pulling for Vandy and hope that this season is alot better than last year. I was very critical of Mason after the Temple and Ole MIss games but as some have said, he has to be better with one year under his belt. Here's to beating the Hill Toppers and having a hopefully winning season.

Options 2 or 3.

The expectation with Mason as HC is that that defense at least will be solid. If Vandy loses in a blowout (not caused by offensive turnovers) then that creates a really large hole for ya'll do dig yourselves out of.

Aside from the name, WKU is a solid team, and a challenging first game for the 'Dores.

What is the Vandy offense supposed to be like?

(also, first post! Go Dawgs and Go Dores! )

WKU catching plus money is the biggest gift of week one. Brandon Doughty will get his numbers and basically Vandy just won't be able to keep up. I think the Dores will be improved, but it's not like they could get any worse.

WKU - 38
Vanderbilt - 27

I don't think Vandy does win, but at least it should be an improvement over last year's season opener. A 7-17 point loss may be in the cards, but Vandy should at least have a chance. If Vandy wins, especially if it's by more than 7, than I think that's a definite indication of progress over the offseason.

The expectation is a run-first offense using the TEs a lot to help block and in the PA passing game. Interestingly, there have been a few mentions of tempo, so that could be interesting. I'm not sure anyone has really had a run-first, TE heavy offense with any real high-paced element. That may not happen, and the tempo may just be thrown in sparingly in certain sets, but who knows until we see it live?

Unfortunately for Vandy, aside from the Franklin tenure, and some of the defensive recruits in the Woodenhoffer (sp) era (as DC then hc?), it's tough to recruit enough bodies to VU -- even though you guys have a lot to offer.

Moving to a more run-first/churn-clock offense makes a lot of sense if you can actually burn clock and limit the number of plays your defense is on the field.

As long as there are checks to the side, "tempo" can also be used to keep the wrong personnel grouping for the other team on the field. Hopefully you can pull that off against the hilltoppers!

Go Dores!

I think we have the bodies to be competitive this year. It's just a matter of getting those bodies in the right places and doing their jobs correctly.

Vanderbilt will lose to WKU, get thumped by MTSU and lose all eight SEC games.

I'm not being a douche. Yall can be competitive with a good head coach, but the guy yall have now is simply incompetent. Don't try to spin it that he's not.

Also, your best QB quit, best WR got hurt, and best OL got hurt.

It's gonna be bad this year.

I think Vandy will edge WKU 35-31.

Given the firepower WKU has on offense I don't see them getting shut down by Vanderbilt. That having been said if Vanderbilt shows a pulse on offense they should be able to score their share of points as well. A shootout win or loss would be my pick unless one team completely befouls the bed with turnovers.

Humor me. What if Vandy does come out and beat WKU while looking like a competent team? I'm not arguing Mason becomes a great coach or anything, but what if somehow something clicks. Does that change your opinion any?

If Mason's list doesn't improve his abilities, I expect WKU to win the game after leading for most of it. If he has completely remade his coaching style, all bets are off. Based on what I saw last year, though, I think WKU has this one in the bag.
