I get it now, Mizzou can't go bowling, so you're just getting a jump on the offseason.

Bold move.

Alabama wasn't around yet.

James Madison basically declared the Spanish territory of West Florida to be part of the Louisiana Purchase, and he chose the area between the Mississippi and Perdido Rivers as the boundary.... the Perdido River is the present-day boundary between Alabama and Florida.

The territory was annexed into the Mississippi territory in 1812. In 1817, Mississippi became a state, and at that time, the Eastern portion of Mississippi separated to form the Alabama territory... which then became its own state two years later in 1819.

West Florida would actually make a lot of sense to be its own state. The boundary basically ran like this:

Baton Rouge - Hammond - Gulfport - Biloxi - Mobile - Pensacola - Destin - Panama City - Appalachacola

That would make sense as a state.

Mobile doesn't really fit the rest of Alabama
The Panhandle doesn't really fit the rest of Florida
Gulfport-Biloxi doesn't really fit the rest of Mississippi.

They are all far more alike as a group than they are with their current state affiliations.

The Spanish had all of that coast up to (get a load of this) the Florida parishes in Louisiana.

This. British ceded west Florida to Spain some time in the 1790s, I believe.
