Yes, they hold their annual meet and greet for Sith Lord Saban at Wal-mart.

In the SEC they call them sidewalk fans for some reason.

I think they graduate about 10,000 people a year. Their enrollment jumped up really high in the last years though. Average that out by 5 million fans.
I would say between 40,000 to 50,000 alumni are currently living.

I never understood this argument.
How many of these folks ever suited up for the Raiders???
I have good friend (Bama fan) that is a pharmacist. When he went to school, he had 2 choices. Auburn University or Samford University. (Only pharmacy schools in-state). He grew up such a big Bama fan, that he couldn't fathom giving Auburn money and chose to go to Samford.
Does this make him less of an Alabama fan?.
I worked with a doctor that was the biggest Barner on the face of the planet. Outside of football games, he never set foot on the campus.
It's fandom. We have no pro teams in state. Get over it.

The Oakland Raiders are not an institution of higher learning. In fact, very far from it.
So, no.

Yes. He didn't get the full experience of being an Alabama fan.

The question was about T-shirt Fans......all pro teams are made up of T-shirt fans. Being an institution of higher learning is not really relevant to the question he asked.

So people that didn't go to college can't have a favorite college team? Hmm...

It absolutely is, but ok.
Have it your way, Mr. Shagnasty.

What's odd is they have really high out-of-state student body percentage. I guess UofA doesn't like Bama fans either

I graduated from a smaller state school after going on an athletic scholarship, but my first memory of attending a Bama game was in 1973 in Tuscaloosa when I was 8 years old. I was Johnny Musso in a tear-away No. 22 jersey in my mind in backyard and peewee football. I grew up going to Iron Bowls at Legion Field. I’m as legit a fan as any graduate. I don’t give a damn what you or anybody else calls me.

I lived there for 15 years.
There’s a lot of Bama fans that aren’t just bandwagoners. It’s real to them.
Braves fans, maybe.
Bama fans may be noisier than ever nowadays, but they were always Bama fans.
ETA: you mean alumni? I’m a Tech alum but have LSU season tickets. Not a fan of categorizing fans this way.

Sidewalk fans aren't necessarily bandwagoners.
Bama has a lot of both, which makes sense. Sidewalk fans are more likely to be fickle because their ties don't run that deeply. If they can't wear a Bama sweatsuit to Winn Dixie or talk shite to Auburn/LSU/Tennessee fans, it has little value to them.
Of course, that hasn't been a problem lately so you don't see a lot of hot and cold from that contingent of Bama's fanbase.

While being an alum / student certainly gives one a more nuanced connection with a team, state schools belong to the people of the state; they support the schools through tax revenue, vote on ballot measures involving the schools, non-alums patronize the school through tuition for a relative or by supporting athletics . . .
"Sidewalks" are fully entitled to fandom. I am extremely fortunate that my parents were willing and able to pay my way through UA. Others aren't as lucky. Doesn't make them lesser fans by any means.

Pro teams have no affiliation with any institution that can be attended.
So, providing a pro team as an example is just irrelevant to the thread.
