How much does South Carolina miss Connor Shaw this season?

I was arguing with a fellow gator fan actually that USCe wouldn't see much of a drop off between Shaw and Thompson this year, but I was told to go check the stats.

Connor Shaw's emergence as the starting QB at USCe coincides with their best run in school history and three 11-2 seasons.

He was 27-5 as a starter and obviously had an impact in other games he didn't start (see Mizzou 2013) and here are his career stats:

480-733, 65.5%, 6073 yards, 56 TD, 16 INT
452 carries, 1683 yards, 17 TD

That is a ton of production and lot of winning plays leaving. I think you could probably start a thread like this about Aaron Murray as well, but I thought it was more significant in the case of South Carolina, because UGA was good before Murray got there, but South Carolina was mediocre until Shaw got there.

It seems to me that South Carolina may miss Shaw more than I originally though. How do USCe fans feel about it?

Got plans for the rest of the day so this is a quick response.

Shaw threw 1 INT last year.. whatever the hell happens I imagine after poor Dylan throws his 2nd pick the spoiled Gamecock faithful may be all over him.

Dylan Thompson started two games last year, went 30-59 with 0 TD's and 2 INT's. Had to be replaced by an injured Shaw in the second half of the Mizzou game because he was throwing ducks off of his front foot. The guy has very little mobility with a very young and inexperienced WR corps. USC fans are all delusional if they think they're offense will be anything close to what it was last year.

I saw that, even Tebow never went through an entire season only throwing one pic. I think in 2008 he only threw 2, until the national title game where he threw 2 more.

We'll miss Shaw, how much, I dunno.

Spurrier loves Thompson.

Thompson is the quintessential Spurrier QB.

We have a solid running game returning, along with maybe one of the better OLines in the country and a very talented group of WRs. I dunno. I like our chances with Thompson. He's got a good supporting cast around him.

We have been blessed by having not only above average QB's in recent years but what makes me smile is the fact that we have good character at QB. Shaw was an All American type of kid but I believe Thompson is a great kid as well. In case you didn't know he is a devote Christian that motivates his teammates in a positive way. I'm sure he'll be a fine replacement for Shaw this season and he'll be a solid guy for us at QB even though I'm sure Gamecock Nation will miss Shaw and his ability to lengthen drives with his legs.

Damn you're still saying that about our WRs? A junior, senior, redshirt senior, and sophomore make for a young and inexperienced WR corp?

I wonder what team that was against.

Seriously though, Connor Shaw was one heck of a quarterback. He was great for y'all.

Thompson has two seniors (Jones, Byrd) and a junior (Roland) as his three primary receivers next year.

Maybe you should stick to talking about shite that you know something about.

They are offense? They don't teach copy editing at the vaunted Mizzou journalism school?

Regardless, Thompson had some great games in '12, where he carved up Clemson and ECU. His career stats have 1827 passing yards with 14 TDs and 5 picks. It's nothing to necessarily write home about, but it's better than a complete unknown at QB.

As to the original poster, I think USC misses Shaw quite a bit this year. He was one of the best QBs of the SEC in the last decade, and was criminally underrated. Thompson has shown good decision making and control in spot starts, but he's not the most talented guy USC's ever had back there. If he can play to potential and within the system, I don't think he'll necessarily lose a game, but he may not have a signature win a la Shaw/Mizzou last year.

Actually, honestly, it's probably going to be better.

A very solid OLine. Good group of four solid RBs. A solid group of experienced upperclass receivers. Solid QB. Great trio of tight ends. Solid offensive mind in Spurrier.

Yeah, I like our chances for it to be improved actually.

I could see Thompson throwing for 3,000 yards, Davis rushing for another 1,000 plus the other backs combined should rack-up another 1,500. Add in some other rushing yards and passing yards from the backups ... we had what, 5,000 total yards last season? I think it'll be closer to 6,000 this year from the offense.

Where the big question mark is - it's at sacks. We'll be throwing the ball more so there will be more sacks, especially with Thompson not being as mobile as Shaw, but Thompson is plenty mobile. Few teams have a QB as mobile as Shaw was. Thompson will make-up the difference with his quick release and ability to slide around in the pocket and still deliver the ball ... his forte so-to-speak.

But listen, I'm not arguing with you are even trying to convince you of anything. I think trying to reason with you would be an effort in futility.

Cocks will still be good on offense, real good with Davis and their OL. Thompson will be a drop off but not a catastrophic game. Still the favorites in the East but not the lock they would be with Shaw. Defensive backs might be their Achilles Heel, a good throwing team might force them into a shoot out, that is when Shaw's loss would show. A&M game may show a lot if any team can actually do that though.

Just FYI - South Carolina had 5,880 total yards last year and averaged 452.3 yards per game. I doubt they improve on that losing a guy like Shaw, just based off of his numbers. It really puts his play on the field in perspective.

I still think we beat those numbers this year.

you say the same thing about us, with our 3 senior receivers..

oh well, nice to know hypocrisy is alive and well when comparing teams in the SEC.

Thompson is a great garbage time QB, I'll give you that, those nail biters against awesome teams like Coast Carolina were sure vindictive of Thompson's real stats. Which in 2 starts last year, he failed to throw a TD. But lets go back 2 years to find the real Dylan Thompson, the one who had Ellington to throw to, and not 3 guys who have never caught more than 35 passes in a season. Hell your second leading WR last year was your RB.

Keep expecting that 6,000 yard season though,

Name Mauk's decent games against opponents not named Kentucky and Tennessee, then.
