I think it's popular with people in mid-sized places who think they're rural because it's laughable if you've ever actually lived in a small town.
I know I knock on Kentucky but it also has beautiful farms and scenery. Cumberland Falls is also a great place to visit.

More whites were lynched than black in the US. Race riots are rarely about race for the last 30 plus years(ie 2 generations), now they are about elections and white savior complex.
Most small southern small towns are not white.
