Because Auburn is clearly playing like the best team in the country right now, but a certain percentage of the media absolutely refuses to vote a Bruce-Pearl-coached team in at #1.

For obvious reasons.**

Agreed Arkansas wasn’t much but winning on the road at Illinois was a tough game and so were the neutral site games against Baylor and Louisville. They won’t remain number one because they still lack a consistent second scorer on offense but they are very good 3-6ish ranked team

In reality it's because the #1 team lost during the same ranking period where Auburn lost at Duke and Tennessee won at Illinois, so they weren't going to move Auburn to #1 after a loss. Then once that was in place it just kind of stuck and it will probably stick until Tennessee loses.

Also, Tennessee has beaten some good teams. They won on the road at Illinois, beat Baylor at a neutral and won at Louisville. Their resume is nowhere close to Auburn's (or Alabama's for that matter), though. But it's not totally empty.

Secret filming in sports isn't limited to football (USA Today)
quote:

An SEC spokesperson confirmed the SEC office was "made aware of general concerns about video cameras in basketball arenas related to visiting team practices and informally received information involving an individual institution. Uncorroborated information is typically shared with an involved institution, which occurred during the off-season period."

The SEC did not name the institution, but according to six people affiliated with different SEC programs, Auburn was the team at the center of the spying allegations.

Auburn's Bruce Pearl symbolizes the rot in college athletics (USA Today)
quote:

Just one of his run-ins with the NCAA would have been enough to torpedo the career of pretty much any other coach. There was the secret taping of a recruit to try and bust a rival. There was the barbecue with recruits, at his house, which he made worse by lying about afterward and encouraging his assistants to do the same. There were the assistants caught up in FBI investigations.

But that’s Pearl. There is no jam too big for him to escape, no sin too grave for him to be forgiven. Somehow, he’s managed to turn sleaze into an attribute.

Auburn won't appeal Bruce Pearl's show-cause penalty (Montgomery Advertiser)
quote:

Pearl received a three-year show-cause penalty for lying to the NCAA about an impermissible visit to his home by prospective recruit. While this was only a minor violation, the NCAA felt Pearl's lies elevated it to a major one. Each of his assistants received one-year show-cause orders. Pearl was hired as head coach at Auburn in March 2014—the first known instance of a coach being hired at a power conference school after serving a show-cause.

Auburn Men's Basketball Hit With Sanctions Stemming From 2017 FBI Probe (SI)
quote:

Auburn men's basketball was hit with major sanctions by The NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions (COI) on Friday, resulting in a two-game suspension for head coach Bruce Pearl, one-year show cause for an unnamed assistant coach and a 10-year show cause for Chuck Person.

Additionally, the program will face recruiting and scholarship reductions. The program will face four years of probation from December 10, 2021 through December 9, 2025.

"This case also involved a head coach responsibility violation because the head coach was unable to demonstrate that he promoted an atmosphere of compliance and monitored the associate head coach's actions," COI said in its decision."

Tennessee doesn't have the strongest schedule so far, but as SEC schools go...most aren't really setting the world on fire with schedule strength.

I will explain it to you. The writers will look at the teams and then vote on them using a 1–25-point system. Tennessee got the highest number of votes in that system therefore they are No.! I hope that helped clear it up for you.

Those media folks that won't vote for his team are obviously anti-Semites.

You know, I didn't come prepared today to list all of the things that your coach has done in these post comments. Maybe that's a job for you guys, since you don't really seem to know a whole lot about him.

A tape-recorded conversation (LA Times)
quote:

A tape-recorded conversation between a University of Iowa basketball recruiter and player Deon Thomas supported NCAA allegations that Thomas received a cash offer to play for Illinois, a newspaper reported.

Thomas discussed the offer in a telephone conversation in April of 1989 with Iowa assistant coach Bruce Pearl, who secretly recorded the comments and sent the tape to the NCAA, the Chicago Tribune reported.
