How do you think Brent Venables is going to fair as a head coach at OU?

I live in OKC so it's hard to get a static-free read on the topic here. Local media and fans think he's the program's savior. To be clear, I am not an OU fan.

Pros on Brent: He's recruiting well so far. They are making a major commitment to facility upgrades to be "competitive" in the SEC. His first season or two will be in the second-easiest conference in CFB; so, he can have some early success and build some momentum.

On the other hand, though, I have reasons to be skeptical. He's never head-coached a game nor run a program. Best predictor of future behavior is past behavior, and OU hasn't been able to run with the big boys for two decades. The state of Oklahoma doesn't put out the athletes the south does, so they depend heavily on Texas and national recruits. If A&M, Texas and Baylor are recruiting well, it gets harder for OU. Within their own sphere, OU fans are -- for the most part -- used to winning a lot and scoring a lot of points. If they move to the SEC with a defensive-minded head coach and start losing 2-3 games a year they may turn on the man and not give him much rope.

I guess Venables is a high risk-high reward type of hire. How do you think he's going to do?

edit: spelling

I think he’ll be a slight downgrade but not terrible

SEC time though will be the telltale

Defense will improve in a league where there is no defense.
Offense falls off.
I can see them losing to teams who can put up points.

If OU had stayed in Big 12 OU would be a powerhouse under Venables. But in the SEC, you should be happy to win the division once every ten years or so.

Great assessment. I have a lot of family in OKC so I am well aware of the OU culture up there. Only time will tell, but I just don’t see him matching the success of Stoops. I think fans will turn on him even after a couple decent but not fantastic seasons and not give him the time he needs to build the program.

Generally true, though last year Baylor and Ok State won mostly relying on defense. Maybe things are shifting in that conference. Or possibly last year was an anomaly.

As good or better. OU's problem was always the D and Venables will improve that. The real question is whether they can recruit and coach the O at or near the level of Riley, and I think they can with Jeff Lebby.

I’m really not sure. This isn’t like most first time head coaches who get that opportunity fairly early in their careers.

He’ll be fired after OU has been in the SEC for 2 seasons.

Bama and Georgia have had elite defenses mostly due to having crazy good recruiting classes.

The rest of the conference is the exact same as the majority of the big 12. No difference when it comes to defense

He’ll fail. Just bc u r an elite X’s and O’s guy on one side of the ball, it doesn’t make u a head coach.

He'll be replaced by Clark Lea midseason after a rather public altercation over sneeze guards at the Golden Corral

I don’t think OU will hit rock bottom, but they’ll average 3 losses a year. Texas and Baylor will pass them, and it’s the best time for Gundy to pick up some Bedlam wins.

But he only has one, two more Bedlams opportunities-- tops.

Every OU fan who follows OU already knows we got one of the best coaches in football … who changed the culture got a new buzz and energy we haven’t had even when Riley had us in the playoffs . We are so much better in all areas of coaching it’s not funny compared to our old staff . He’s a an elite recruiter as wel l. OU will be Bama in 3-5 years this year most will be shocked at how good we are !

I already posted a Thread about everyone predictions on Brent and don’t worry I will keep notes regardless . Your guys response is that of the national media which doesn’t really matter… we are breaking ground on a new 175 million dollar football operations center next to the stadium . Donations going crazy everyone is on board at OU .

OU recruiting will end up top 2 this year. Expect the same going forward. People don’t seem to realize Lebby offenses have been ranked higher than Riley’s. All OU has needed is a decent defense to win championships. OU will do very well I’m the SEC. Bama, Georgia and OU will usually be the top 3.

“Changed the culture”

Let’s pretend like for a second that term isn’t fricking retarded.

You’re not “changing a culture” in 6 months.

You traded a good head coach for a career coordinator
