How do Kentucky fans determine a down year prior to the season?

I'm curious because it's 5 new starters every year. Not flaming, I'm all about UK if they aren't playing the gamecocks.

It's not usually 5 new starters. Calipari was calling this a down year before the season started so I would go based off that.

Mark Ennis who covers Louisville stated on Twitter that UK fans "don't like this team" and that's the difference this year versus the 2010/2011 team that also struggled
quote:
@Mengus22: UK fans don't like this team. They endured the 2010-11 team's early struggles happily because they liked them. They don't like these guys.

His strategy of recruiting so many one and dones has the potential to backfire as much as it has a chance to be successful. Any recruiting misses and/or injuries along with limited experienced depth leaves them vulnerable. Of course, if the diaper dandies gel then there's plenty of talent to work with to make deep runs. It's just that experience is needed to be consistent in the big dance most of the time.

Calipari called it a down year before it started? Great motivational speech. But I STILL DON'T ARGUE WITH RESULTS. Caps unintentional.

Noel is improving and is definitely a good enough piece to win with.
Wiltjer is turning into a good bench piece.
The point guard has gotten worse each of Cal's four years. Harrow tries, but he's just not good enough right now.
Poythress and Goodwin are the real problems. They must be maddening for UK fans.

I don't look at it as a very big deal because everyone knew it was going to be a struggle for them at first this year. Every other Cal team has managed to keep at least 1-2 key pieces in place to be "leaders" the next year. This one didn't...
The flip side is that they'll probably have the highest retention rate of his career at UK this year -- and that team will be f'n nasty next year with what they've got coming and ready to compete for titles again...

I just don't see that much there. I'm not sure we even played that well (two years ago we had to play really well to beat that Knight/Lamb/Jones team).
Noel's good, but even he doesn't have much of an offensive game. I barely noticed Poythress. Harrow's just ok. Goodwin is one of the most underwhelming projected lottery picks I've seen in a while.

I don't see this team maturing as the season goes. NIT is a real possibility.

I hate the one-and-done thing by the NBA. Don't get me wrong, I love beating UK but all the best players leave after 1 year. That's terrible for CBB.

This is the first year that we've had five new starters.

Yep. This team has zero leadership and very little heart. A lot of times they look like they don't even care. That 10-11 team played as hard as they could. I think that we knew we were in for a down year, but don't think anyone say us being this bad. I really wouldn't mind the losses if they played hard. They suck at defense, which is usually a Cal trademark. They have zero post play. We also don't have a go to scorer. The good news is it's open season on UK for everyone else because next year is going to be beatdown city.

I hated Team Turmoil under Tubby. I don't hate this team like that. I am incredibly frustrated by a couple of players (Goodwin and Poythress) to the point that I wouldn't be that sad to see them leave.
I love some Noel though. He's really raw offensively but it's a delight to watch him work on defense. He doesn't quit.
That said, I think you'd find most UK fans predicted this to be a down year because we knew what we didn't have returning. Almost every one I knew is pointing to the Harrison Twins and Co. coming in next season as our next potential championship run.

I don't follow basketball recruiting as much as I'm sure ya'll do. Where is Wiggins expected to go? Any other players you expect UK to take?
Amazing class so far as is

We expect every year to make the tourney and be in the top 25 no matter what. Depending on the team the final 4 could be the minimum or just the sweet 16. Last year we expected to win the national championship or get to the final 4. Just depends on the team.

That team is the definition of shitheads. I don't hate this team that much either. Although, I'm at the point now that I don't really care what goes on. I think it's fair to say that most UK fans know basketball and what champions look like. We aren't anywhere near that level. It's very disappointing but a little less after last years squad.

Does Kentucky basketball consider a college degree as an asset for its players?
Posted on 1/23/13 at 5:17 am to TenTex
Seeing as they encourage guys to re-enroll, as Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist will this summer, to finish their degree I don't know why they wouldn't. Also have had several former guys under previous coaches come back under Cal to do the same.

They don't have the 2-3 upperclassmen to make a significant contribution and stablizing influence this year as they had the past few. Even I could see this one coming cause it's all freshmen. You're not gonna catch lightning in a bottle every year with freshmen like Walls and Davis.
