Cause the truth is more embarrassing. Enough to pay his full buyout.

At will state
A contract that specifies the reasons you can or cannot be fired takes precedence over the principle of at will employment.
The employer can still terminate for any reason, but if it’s not for cause as defined in the contract they are on the hook for paying the remaining salary due or the liquidated damages (buyout) or whatever they can negotiate to stay out of court.

Does anybody really know what he's going to be owed?
In the article I read, it says "according to the terms of his contract" he'll be owed over $17M...
But, with him coming out and saying he's leaving, it appears to me that this is a negotiated deal. In other words, LSU would have tried to fire him with cause if they could for the Derrius Guice allegations/lawsuit and his allegedly turning his head in other cases.
So, is he really going to get the stated amount, or did they negotiate with his lawyers to lower the payout?
The way it was announced, I'd suspect it was negotiated down. No one in any official capacity has said he was "fired." (That I know of)
