Our game against Alabama on Saturday will be the first top 10 matchup in a home game in the history of A&M basketball.

Back in the 70s and early 80s basketball was big. We would have to leave dinner early to get in. Shelby Metcalf won 6 SWC championships. A Sweet 16 versus Louisville was a heartbreaker.

Had a team called the wall because all starters but one was 6’8” or taller.

We were ranked in the top 10 for about a month in 1960. That's it until 2007.

(Now, granted, it was a totally different institution back then - hardly more than a service academy).

In 27 seasons Metcalf had 3 losing seasons. After he was fired they had one winning season the next 15 years.

But Texas historically hasn't been a basketball state.

Phi Slama Jama, UTEP w Don Haskins. Baylor won a title.
Texas juco was really good in the 80’s.
But yeah, overall the state hasn’t had a lot of success.

Historically, we've been a pretty decent program. Thanks for asking.

I LOVE Aggie sports, but that’s just not true.

Again, in the HISTORY of our program, this is the first top 10 matchup EVER played at home. Prior to 2007, we had only ever been ranked in the top 10 ONCE - a stretch of about a month in the 60s.

I LOVE Shelby. Hell of a coach. And we were never bad under him. But never once did he have the Ags ranked in the top 10.

I think it is both interesting and amazing that the game Saturday is the first top 10 matchup we’ve ever played at home.

Franchione turned us into a basketball school for a few years. Acie Law IV was one of the funnest college players I’ve ever seen play. Definitely the most clutch.

No shite. This is a thread literally telling you A&M has very little basketball history. And just FYI A&M was at one time 1-25 all time against OU. In the last 20 years it's 10-7, so finally making some improvement.
