I said as much when I attributed it to our failures. We actually are saying the same things.

How apathetic is ole miss out-of-state students once they leave? My bro-in-law's best friend went to ole miss but he basically told me he doesn't keep up with them too much.

You're right. I should get caught up.

Basically, we were our own worst enemy for the longest time. We've made some good decisions as of late, especially the hiring of Ross Bjork, but it's going to take years for us to get back on track. Rome wasn't built in a single football season, you know.

I really can't help you here outside of general perceptions. DCRebel would be more qualified in this area. The out of staters I know want to help but don't know how outside of UMAA stuff.

You know, it's really hard to say. I would imagine that folks in Mississippi are more in tune with Ole Miss and more into it, simply because it's more prevalent in the media a part of the conversation down there.

Ole Miss fans living in DC, NY, Chicago, and to a lesser extent Dallas and Atlanta, can easily go an entire day without talking about Ole Miss, and in the case of DC and NY, an entire day without talking about football entirely.

I love and follow Ole Miss pretty closely, but a lot of the people up here don't as much.

I'll say for myself that after graduating and moving to North Carolina I do not feel apathetic at all. I just went down for Double Decker, and getting back to Oxford is definitely a task, but this has done nothing to deter how I feel about our athletics programs. It's hard to get enveloped in a schools athletics for 5 years (yeah it took me 5 frick off) and then just click it off when you graduate and move away. The guy that made that comment probably didn't give a shite in the first place.

The Klan had a right to protest because it was in what is deemed a "free speech" zone.

Of course, the incredibly overwhelming majority attending the game that day did not want the KKK present.

The fact is that Ole Miss, as a public institution, did not have a choice.

Ever heard of Texas v. Johnson? Dennis Johnson burned an American flag on the steps of the Dallas City Hall and was subsequently arrested under a Texas flag burning statute.

The Supreme Court overturned his conviction and the statute and ruled that the government "may not prescribe expressive conduct because it has expressive elements."

We couldn't stop them because they had a right to protest. Unfortunately, they picked our campus on the day of the biggest home game in years.

Texas v. Johnson

Yes, I'm a con law student

Are you a Mississippi native though? I was referring to ones that come from Texas or outside the SEC.

As the OP, I again appreciate all the great info. I am very surprised by only one thing- how much race has been discussed as being a main factor or not. I guess it does not matter whether it is deserved or not (I think not, but thats just me), it is about perception. On the LSU board we often see threads about the perception that Les is not as "smart" as most other coaches. No matter what some will see him as "stupid"- it is their perception and it may or may not be backed up by facts. I have to say that IMO if OM the school is considered "racist" to the point it loses top talent, we ALL are at risk (sec schools). Anyway, thanks for the feedback to all those who gave legit thoughts. My last IMO thought for what its worth- Nutt was/is a fraud and you are MUCH better off with a new coach and new AD.

Pretty much sums it up. He said he had fun when he visited and decided to go there. I don't think he regrets his decision any, just moved on.

2. There are 3 D1 schools

There's 5 in Louisiana, barely.

Not a good excuse. There are at least 3 in every SEC state, besides maybe South Carolina and Georgia.

Nope, from NC. Wanted to get far away after high school, visited Oxford and fell in love with the campus/town.

I think you know what the guy is saying. Louisiana has one big D1 school, and 4 that are really small, in a state with twice the population as MS. MS has three pretty big D1 schools in a state with a VERY small pop.
That goes for pretty much every other state too...
Unfortunately, that is the only legit excuse I think that one can make. It was OM's own fault for sticking with Boone, we can't control how many schools we have in the state and our small population. Add to that, just think about how poor the academics are in MS high schools.

When was the last time a 5 star recruit went to La Tech or Tulane? Southern gets them every now and then. They just factor in 10% but 10% of 8 is a lot.

And to answer your question- yes, money is a factor. Yes, perception of our school is a factor. But the truth is we haven't gotten to that level because we haven't been good enough. We haven't developed the mental and physical discipline to be champions, only impressive runner-ups at best.

Dont know about that Tuberville was a good coach. And Cutcliffe was too. You guys lost Tubbs to more money and a bigger program at Auburn (shite happens), but Cutcliffe was a good fit. Yall ran him off too soon.
