The perception is Ole Miss is a racist school. The past 10 years or so they have slowly started to break away from that stereotype. They were good in the 50s and 60s since it was only white players. Ole Miss went to shite when black players were allowed to play.

I watched part of the Valparaiso - Ole Miss tournament game from '98 recently. They mentioned a player's mom who didn't want him to go there, because she only heard bad things about the school dealing with race.

What racial tension is there on campus right now?

Once again, the OP was asking about 40 years of history, not just the present.

Do you even know why the Klan showed up?

Doesn't matter, you had the Klan fully decked out having a rally on your campus. That doesn't buff out easily.

I also saw a video of a counter-rally opposing the Klan, and the students are screaming "Y'all look like a buncha F**GOTS"

One step forward and two steps back I guess.

They were talking about Raheem Lockhart if I remember that correctly and when he got on campus it was the exact opposite he was worshiped.

I don't know about 63' - 08' but from 08' - present, Houston Dale Nutt would be the reason. Not winning a natty with Darren McFadden, Felix Jones, and Peyton Hillis should've showed Ole Miss to go another direction. You guys went from something to absolute shite with that man, and he did the same thing to Arky.

40% of students is maybe a 1/6 of the entire stadium so my point stands a minority ruined it for everyone.

Stonehog- they were in a free speech zone. They were within their rights to be there no
matter how vehemently we didn't want them
to be. You do know the first amendment I
presume?

ETA: somebody post the auburn fan who was actively partcipating I can't because I'm on my phone

So let's figure this out. Are the other schools in the SEC Klan free because we don't know the first amendment, or is Ole Miss just historically tied to racial tension?

13 other schools in the league have never had an on-campus Klan rally, so I ask, are we the odd men out? Is Ole Miss the only normal school in the conference?

Honest question for Ole Miss fans. What are the 2-3 main reasons you guys have not won SEC since 1963?

The main issue started with the retirement of Vaught. He wanted Ole Miss to hire Bob Tyler but they ended up hiring Billy Kinard who ended up being a terrible coach. Add to that that this was going on during the same time as football teams were being integrated, and Ole Miss was the last SEC school to integrate the football team.

So, the football team started to have shitty seasons, something Ole Miss fans weren't used to, and coaches were fired left and right (something you still see Ole Miss do to this day). During this whole time of of being too occupied with hiring and firing coaches, the university was beginning to fall seriously behind in the arms race of SEC facilities.

At the same time, Mississippi State (who was largely irrelevant in the state for quite some time) began to steadily improve its product and appeal to Mississippians. This has been mostly scoffed at and ignored by OM fans over the years but has become an inconvenient reality presently.

Incompetence in the AD had been the main issue with our mediocrity. If this recent hire was the right one, we still have the resources to become a serious threat in the SEC, but if the hire isn't good it will just send us deeper into the pit that we have been digging for 40 years.

As bad as Boone was, he at least laid a foundation (facilities-wise) that the current AD may be able to build off of and reunite a torn and weary fanbase.

I am gonna need to see a link about the other schools never having Klan rallies. We couldn't prevent them from coming no more than any other university could it's within their rights. They showed up to protest the school taking away FDWL which a small minority of the fanbase ruined. Stop acting like they were there because of race.

As much as you want it to be about race it is not. It's incompetence as evidenced by the other OM fans in this thread.

The biggest problems with Mississippi colleges is that you have 3 D1 schools in a small state. Plenty of talented athletes, but half of the top 40 every year doesn't qualify. Ms Juco football is loaded with SEC talent.

We still have a race issue. Whether you accept it or not that is what the whole Col Reb thing is about. Just as many people want him back because he was their mascot growing up, there is a large portion that want him back for what they think he stands for.

I never said we don't or never had a problem. I absolutely acknowledge that it is present and always will be however the argument that it has held us back is false. Which is what Stonehog was proposing. Our own incompetence is the answer. We are Ole Miss is ironic for a reason.

ETA: To clarify my statement race is not the main factor in OM's problems. It is a problem.

1. Black players entering SEC football brought an end to the Mississippi Rebels having a good program.

2. Smallest population of any southern state

3. The education system isnt great- but it's not that bad. The problem is Mississippi and it's government leaders spent so much time denying blacks and others education through the years- it's created a state that is severely lacking in intelligence.

You have a state full of poor, uneducated parents. And those ignorant parents turn around and have 3-4 kids with 2-3 different daddy's. And nobody is there at home to help begin educating these kids. They expect the school system to teach 6 yr old kids their ABC's, how to read and write, etc- when these things should have been started at ages 2,3,4...

People want to put too much blame on the school system. There are 5*, 4*, 3* students- just like there are athletes. And Mississippi has way too many 2* students people want developed into 5* results. Most Mississippi students start 1st grade way behind to begin with- the school can only do so much.

Wow, was just going to post this exact sentiment. Almost word for word.

and even if you start now, it will be 2-3 generations before anything ever improves.
