No, he worked back channels, associates, friends, etc. trying to get Nutt's job from day one.

It back fired on him when Woods left and Nutt brought in David Lee, who Mustain spent his summers with learning to play QB.

Horton was also being brought in so Nutt had 3 former OCs on staff, one of which has more influence with the people Gus was trying to persuade in ousting Nutt and naming him the successor thanks to his daddy.

Of course Nutt knew Malzahn couldn't take the blow to his ego in being demoted to just the WRs coach, he left for Tulsa.

After the first time Gus went above Nutt's head over trivial shite and continued to stir the pot while portraying himself as the victim, Nutt decided he must go. The boiling point was Gus encouraging Williams to transferring to SC and was encouraging Mitch to do the same, Nutt's play was to remove the cancer in the program, bring in Lee to develop Mustain, and give Mustain a shot at earning the job over the summer.

Much of the myth about Malzahn being an innocent victim here has been put out by Irwin who was played by Gus like a fiddle.

Sounds like petty bullshite to me. Who the frick cares?

Did that bullshite you are talking about really matter? In 06 Ark won the west. 07 was not terrible 08 sucked and 09 bounced back with Petrino. You guys sound like such whiny pussies when it comes to Gus. it's hilarious

Bear Bryant could have been our Bear Bryant. Malzahn's just a former walk-on

If he wins again, then he wins again. How we can be mad at him for wanting our job and trying to beat us to prove he's worthy of it?

By the time they played Arkansas, yes Ole Miss sucked. They fell apart on offense after Treadwell went down. They weren't even that good before either. They were hyped up because they beat an overrated Alabama team, but hadn't played anybody else.

LSU sucked too. Auburn wasn't good down the stretch, everybody knows it. There was a mental breakdown after the Texas a&m game and the 4 games Duke was out it stunted the offense.

So what you're saying is that Arkansas was better then Ole Miss, LSU and Auburn?

I have no problem with that.

Yes I'm serious. We didn't start the thread. Whether you believe it or not, Gus is just another coach from the state of Arkansas. The majority of us don't care. We are, however, reminded constantly that we should by the waterheads on tRant. Mostly from LSU and Auburn fans.

David Lee has to beat teams off with a stick, he's such a popular choice as offensive coordinator to teams.

I hate to question the company line. But that is a little hard to believe. The version of that story implies a HS coach out politic'd and maneuvered a well know D-I head coach via booster back channels. It is a bit hard to swallow. Though you do provide a great deal of detail about the situation. However, we all know the key to a good lie is innocent detail.

I can imagine HN getting upset that Gus might have encouraged Williams to leave, but it seems more plausible that this was after Gus had decided to scoot as well.

As for Auburn, Gus and Arkansas…I have said this before it is possible for Gus to be a great coach and for Auburn to believe he is the man for their job and Arkansas to have looked in a different direction. Long not looking at Gus or Gus not wanting to be the coach at Arkansas over Auburn doesn't reflect poorly on either man or program.

Hell, none of that is true. Gus was done wrong by Hootie and his blow fish. Hootie was forced by the powers that be to hire Gus. Gus was not the problem, he was in a tank with sharks. Hootie and his staff treated him terrible, calling him high school!

I did not want Gus at Arkansas, not because he could not coach, because of a small portion of our fan base was still pissed over the mess that was there.

It would have been to soon to have hired Gus back than,he has always been a great offensive mind and looks like he's making a great SEC coach.

It's no different than Auburn fans booing Chizcik when he was hired. We needed a proven Head Coach with no ties to Arkansas.

Now to answer what we will do if Bret goes 7-6 or worse? Nothing, this is a rebuild and he's having to recruit to his style. He has Arkansas being built correctly inside out. Bret is the best coach we have had sense Broyles when it comes to finding the fit to our program. He is very professional handling his team. I've been a Fayetteville native my whole life. I attend all functions and have information I can trust. That being said, I feel we are in great hands. Bret will be a Razorback for a long time. WPS!

Uhhh, I think it has to do with the one-sided rivalry created by Arkansas fans because NWA is basically a weird little cult. I mean, Arkansas fans have crafted a narrative nobody outside of that state believes about a number of things, including Gus, and constantly trot it out for the SECR's amusement.

that right there is what always killed me. everyone and i mean everyone knew he wasn't wanted by hdn. he took the position anyway.

if i see a piece of gum on the sidewalk and deliberately step into it and it gets stuck on my shoe then i don't expect sympathy/empathy or anything thing else from people. i'm not sure why gus gets to step into it and then people felt sorry for him as if it was so shocking that he and hdn didn't work out.
