Les is under rated even by LSU's own fans. He's solid. Just a bit daring , but it works.

thanks man, but i really don't think Les is a masterful X and O guy. I can't give you my source, but he has admitted it. That's not a problem with me at all, because, in my view many of the best college football H/C's really aren't. Now and historically. They really do very little coaching and their game plans are done by the Co-ordinators subject to approval of course. A well coached team takes a team of good coaches. Nick Saban delegates less than any coach I've known, but even he can't do it all. The H/C position really is a management gig. Bear Bryant won national championships after watching Texas do (Daryl Royal) with the wishbone triple option, which was "invented" by Emory Bellard, one of Royal's asst. coaches. I had a hidden motive starting this thread but am trying to make my point.

You just hit Nutt's nail right on the head. His biggest problem at UA. He wouldn't hire quality assistants and let them do their jobs.

W/O quality asst. coaches, you're dead in the water. Look at bobby bowden. been there too long and kept old friends around as assistants. meanwhile, the game evolved around them. FSU has actually had very good recruiting; they just don't seem to coach 'em up very well.

i've been waiting for a Bama response. the Bear was the best the SEC ever had, but i really don't think he was an X's and O's guy. he was a leader. he knew how to get the most out of his players and coaches. he was a ruthless winner. football was a lot simpler in those days.

I think Coach Bryant knew a lot about x's and o's but why argue. Coach Bryant thought football was a simple game. To him it is all about blocking and tackling. He was convinced that the team that blocked and tackled the best would almost always win the game.

For example, he would tell the offense that if every player blocked his man they would "advance" the ball. Of course, he instructed the defense differently. His was a simple philosophy. I think that is why he was successful for so long.
