Spent a great deal of time in Eldorado, Camden, Arkadelphia, Pine Bluff, and fishing on the Quachita River as a kid. Most likely did pass thru Fordyce at some point but have no specific memory of it.

He also left Arkansas for Alabama before finishing high school and ended up graduating from a Tuscaloosa high school

He played his senior year at Fordyce

He wasn't smart enough to graduate high school in Arkansas, so he had to move to Alabama to finish up.

Huh. Funny how Arkansas was dying to hire him then.

quote:

"Dent mentions that Arkansas offered Bryant the head coaching job in the early 1950s when he quotes what Bryant said during contract negotiations with Texas A&M.

I had lots of offers from schools all over the country,” Bryant said. “The Arkansas people flew me in and offered me an oil-and-gas deal about three years ago. I’d be a millionaire today if I’d took it.”

After failing to sign Bryant in 1941, Arkansas went through seven head coaches in 16 seasons. They compiled a 72-86-5 record over that time span and only beat Bryant’s Aggies once."

I've been to Moro Bay on the river. My dad was from Hermitage (actually, Gravelridge). When we went back to visit when I was a kid, there was a restaurant on the river we'd eat at.

Never been to Moro Bottom , Arkansas , where
Bryant was born and grew up , the 11th of 12 children
and don't plan on it. It's not called "Bottom" for nothing.

Arkansas historically was a bad job with 22 losing seasons before Broyles was hired.

Even if he took the Arkansas job, he would have left for another job within a year.

After the 1941 season, Bryant was offered the head coaching job at the University of Arkansas.[23] However, Pearl Harbor was bombed soon thereafter, and Bryant declined the position to join the United States Navy. In 1942 he served as the ends coach for the Georgia Pre-Flight Skycrackers.
