Butch will get a raise this year no doubt.

He'd most likely take a pay cut at Auburn to not have to live in Starkville again.

Well you know I should have known better. I heard Cohen's comments and went bat crazy. Truth is we can't get a sitting big name coach from another top program.

This coaching search reminds me of when Birmingham tried to enter a bid to get the Summer Olympics

Haven't been following closely enough to know what Cohen said. It appears he proclaimed a big name would be coming and you were sold on someone and promoted it several times. Almost identical situation happened during the TN search with Volfan30. He had someone giving him info and was pretty confident about it and posting about it just like you were. It happens and you move on. Welcome to the world of coaches using your school for more money every 3-5 years(I believe Gundy has gotten us twice now lol), aka the life of a Tennessee fan for the past decade or so.

From what I remember, Cohen said that they would be hiring a big name coach with CWS experience. Somehow that turned into Corbin, Schloss, and McDonnell. Most people said State fans were crazy to think Schloss or Corbin would even consider the job. State fans were convinced Schloss was a done deal. Then when he wasn't, it was McDonnell. Then when he wasn't, it was Godwin at ECU. Corbin never even entertained an offer. I honestly don't know how State got played. I think the fans just played themselves or were played by "insiders" on their home boards. McDonnell at least made logical sense, but even getting him would be a reach. College baseball coaches at good programs just don't job hop like football coaches do. I can only think of two: Serrano from Fullerton to Tennessee. That obviously didn't work out. And then Garrido from Fullerton to Texas.

and starkville was so appealing to all the people who already turned MSU down.

Butch is from Aberdeen, MS which is about 45 minutes from Starkville.

*ahem* except us ones in Texas who knew it was obvious Schloss was angling for a better TCU deal. And not just one on the books.

and Gus is from Arkansas and going back to Arky.

I am not saying Butch won't leave for MSU. However, name me the last HC at Auburn that moved along on their own?

Maybe now our fans can realize that our program isn't as great as they think. We've only been to the CWS nine times. That's not elite by any means. We'll still hire a good coach though.

Yep. We're not a top 10 program. 3 CWS appearances in the last 20 years. That's not too 10.

This is what happened. The guys "in the know" on paid sites kept feeding that narrative.

That has zero to do with the point I was making. I responded to a post that said that Starkville was the reason other coaches opted against the job. Butch may like the situation at Auburn better, but someone from Aberdeen isn't going to have an issue with Starkville as a destination.

I know a lot of people from small towns in the MS that wouldn't ever move back to one. At least Auburn isn't far from his wife's family in Birmingham. I'd also rather be at Auburn than State, but that's another conversation.
