Then add an August preseason game and don't let it count

Well, it’d ideally be scheduled the week prior to said matchup. Especially if the elite team you’re prepping for employs a unique style/player that requires exceptional preparation for, something the scout team may not be able to mimic.

So not only an extra week to prepare/familiarize with scheme/play designs, which will still be fresh on the players minds, but you also get a tune up game to ID/correct any holes before the real matchup. Almost like making half time adjustments prior to kickoff

Nothing wrong with playing fcs teams. Think of it as a bye week
