Florida, this is what makes a tribute authentic.
Saw a Petty concert on tv awhile back. One of the electric guitars was orange with a huge Florida Gator head logo on it. Not sure you can get more authentic than showing your fandome in concert.

Was Tom Petty playing the guitar, or one of his hired gimps?

That was Matt Rice with the Gator guitar. Tom never really gave two shits about sports in general. He was from Gainesville. He worked at UF for a while as a young feller.
That's about it.
The tribute was for a rock legend from Gainesville. It wasn't for some mega Gator booster.
I'm not sure where the confusion comes from.

Gregg Allman took it a step further by creating a fund at UGA for music students.

On Saturday, November 4th, during the highly anticipated SEC football game between the Georgia Bulldogs and the South Carolina Gamecocks at Sanford Stadium in Athens, GA, The University of Georgia will recognize Gregg for his legacy in music and his generosity to the University’s Hugh Hodgson School of Music. In 2015, The Gregg Allman Scholarship Fund was established by Gregg with the UGA Music Business Program and is awarded to students seeking a career in the music industry. During halftime of the game, the Gregg Allman Scholarship recipients will be recognized and the legendary University of Georgia Redcoat Marching Band will perform three Allman Brothers Band songs.
Very, very cool.

Also the fact WSMFP originated there
That has to be probably cause to kick UGA out of the SEC.

It is odd how it somehow turned into a dig against Florida.
