Georgia Tech, Tulane and Sewanee were once members of the SEC.

Why did each leave? I do know Tech was voted out in an 11-0 vote. What happened to the other two; does anyone here know?

Sewanee hasn’t been good since the 1900s (the decade, not the century). Them being a charter member was more about their legacy as a former big name team.
But long story short, they were in the league for 6 seasons and never won an in-conference game in football.

Both were charter members of the SEC in 1933. Tech won or shared five conference titles. Tulane won or shared three. But Dodd and then-school president Edwin Harrison withdrew the school from the conference in January 1964 — 50 years ago — because conference members wouldn’t change a rule that limited the number of scholarships each school could offer in football and basketball to 140. Dodd felt constrained by the rule because he believed competitors ran off players who didn’t produce on the field, while Dodd kept any player he had put on scholarship.

The fact that Tulane and Suwanee were once SEC members, but no longer, should be all the evidence we need to counter the illogical argument that Vandy should get to remain a member, no matter what they contribute, just because they have always been a member.

Georgia Tech left in the 1960’s because they were greedy and wanted to keep all of the bowl revenue for themselves instead of sharing it with the conference. They were GREEDY.
In those days the bowl money was a HUGE deal but little did they know that they shot themselves in the foot and the decision was the WORST thing (athletically) they ever did in their existence.
Conference teams still share revenue but it is way more than just bowl money these days.
No, they were not voted out. They left on their own volition. And they will never be allowed in again.

They left because over the issue over scholarships and they thought they would become the Notre Dame of the south.

GT did try to come back and the only school that said yes to bringing them back was Alabama.
If you have any doubt of GT arrogance, look at their time in the SEC and how many times they played in Mississippi.

Arkansas must have been sweeting bullets after the last decade they put out…
Sounds eerily similar to the University of Sewanee all those years ago.
Sewanee…. Suuu-weeee. Coincidence???

Sewanee’s stadium has only 3000 seats. Would be a tough ticket for a road game.

I’m sure Tulane would like to rethink that decision
Both Tulane and tech probably did it for academic reasons and wanted away from the cheating sec

Coach Paul Bear Bryant made Georgia Tech’s arse quit.

The scholarship deal is the narrative they would like you to believe but it was all about money and control and power. They did not like sharing money with the other members of the conference.
But there is only one Notre Dame and nobody can duplicate their National appeal and following and for GT to think they could was fool hardy and just plain dumb.
And yes I am familiar with their arrogance. Dodd thought Mississippi was a third world country and refused to bring a team to the Magnolia State.
General Neyland had the same attitude after Tennessee lost to State 7-0 in 1950 in Starkvegas (their only loss that year and it cost them the NC) and vowed to never bring another UT team to State. It would be almost 40 years later before Tenner played another game at State.
Imagine blaming the venue/location for the reason lost a game. Obviously it did not have anything to do with other team being better than you that day.

Tech thought they could replicate Notre Dame’s independent success because they’re arrogant.
And of course it was the worst decision their athletic department ever made and their national brand has been slowly but surely diminishing ever since until now that arrogance has devolved into a Napoleon complex.

What is the source of said knowledge?
GT withdrew from the SEC; it was not voted out.

In short, GT threaten to leave the SEC unless it changed the 140 rule. When the vote came, it was 11-0 to keep the 140 rule. GT and Dodd had their hand called and left the conference to fade into current day obscurity along with Sewanee and Tulane, two other former SEC members. They left because the 11-0 vote went totally against them, they lost face in their arrogance of thinking they could run the SEC.

Sewanee would be more likely to have a homo orgy on campus rather than play football these days.
