GA 's Erratic Run Defense

GA has more NFL talent on the defensive side of the ball than ALA. Their LBs Jarvis Jones, Ogletree and Fr Jordan Jenkins are some of the most talented defensive players in the league.
How does GA hold FL to 75 yards rushing on 40 attempts (52 yards in losses) while allowing KY to run for 206 yards on 43 attempts?
AU gained only 57 yards on 27 attempts but GA gave up 197 yards on 40 attempts to TN.
The last 2 weeks GA has given up over 300 yards rushing to GA Southern and GA Tech, both of whom are wishbone teams. Clearly that negatively affects their Rush defense ranking.
SC rushed for 230 yards on 51 attempts.
Another factor that makes the GA rush defense difficult to evaluate is the constantly changing personnel due to suspensions, injuries, et cet.
The only general conclusions that I draw from the data is that GA gives up more rushing yards to teams that have a legitimate passing threat, as evidenced by the TN and SC games.
GA's defense appears to be improving, although it may be due to the level of competition.
GA allows 3.82 yards per rush for the season.
Bama allows 2.36 yards per rush for the season.
I think how well the GA defense stops the run goes a long way toward determining the outcome of this game.

I believe you hit the nail on the head. If you can pass on Georgia, they will not be able to key on the run. Bama needs to pass early to loosen Ga up.

Unfortunately, you've got it backwards.
Those teams were successful on the ground.
That slowed down the pass rush and enabled receivers to get behind the linebackers.
Good news for Bama is that they have a good rungame.
If they get it going, they will be happy with AJs performance

Same can be said for UGA's O vs Bama's D. And lets not forget the run heavy teams that UGA played the last two weeks of the season that skew their run d stats.

It will be on AJ's back. He was injured in the MSU game & it showed the next 2 weeks. Played patsies the last two weeks. We'll see how far he has come since the injury.

If you are looking for a reason why the run defense took so long to develop, it falls on the shoulders of our ILB and Safeties.
They weren't playing in their gaps, well.
Tackles were made way too far downfield.
Shawn Williams called the defense out.
And it's been rosy ever since.
The DL has even picked up more tackles since then.

Yes, I have noticed and spoken on it, in the last few days. UGA without those 2 games, ends up ranked about 30th in the nation in Rush Defense, rather than the current 67th. The flipside is, your pass defense isn't as good as 9th, considering the 2 option teams don't throw the ball very well (or much).

Good question. I think a lot of it can be explained by lack of cohesion on defense due to key players being suspended at the beginning of the season. Regarding Kentucky, all I can say is the Wildcats were sky high and had probably their best game of the season @ Lexington and our defense was crappy. We pretty much played down to our opponent. Fortunately Murray had one of his best games of the season.

Florida had a number of OL injuries. I know that was the issue in Jacksonville.
But I mean, this is like asking why water is wet.
UGA has been inconsistent for 10 years.
If they were consistent with their talent, they would have won multiple national titles years ago.

Our defense before the Florida game and after are 2 completely different units

It appears to me that Georgias run defense is just a microcosm of Georgias program as a whole over the years... inconsistent.
They play like they're coached by Mark Richt. Undisciplined and at times rising to meet their amazing potential. But half the time it looks like they don't give a shite about gap assignment. When they do they're as good as anyone in the country.
ETA: Basically what slayer said.

Mississippi
Auburn
Georgia Southern
Georgia Tech
Same goes for Alabama the last 2 weeks.
Are they "real" or not.

You left off florida. You know, the team that Florida States vaunted defense couldn't stop?

and you said after
So, we get to find out if that was a one game anomaly or the real deal.

Well the defense played well after that too...

Our defense is a conundrum that is not worth trying to figure out. Super-talented but also super-undisciplined at times. At any time they could give up 50 pts or pitch a shutout. I'm just hoping for the best.

I wish there were a few more threads about UGA's shitty defense.

For the year, GA has given up 1961 yards rushing.
Bama has given up 924 yards rushing this season.
Over 1000 yards difference. Congratulations on being the most talented team, Bulldogs.
Bulldogs also have more penalties, 82 to 48. I agree that GA is a much more undisciplined team.
