For SEC west teams only. How do you see the west in baseball this year?

I have contemplated this a few times and I have no idea. It’s gonna be a grind, we all know that so I can only speak of Miss State.

We deff have the bats, very dangerous at the plate. But I honestly have no idea of pitching until I see 15 games. What about your teams?

ETA: We will play solid defense too. But again, I need to see how our pitching turns out.

Macleod is going to be an amazing Saturday guy for us.. I think our bullpen is the real question. We are replacing every single pen pitcher from last season.

Our pitching should be incredible until arm soreness. We have guys like Eric Walker and Ma'Khail Hilliard starting midweek games.

Yep, I heard LSU has some great pitchers. How does your batting line-up look?

We are going to be much bigger this year. We still have a couple of the skinny guys like Hughs and Digiacomo, but most of the others are all big like Cabrera and Beloso. We have a new hitting coach with a new approach so I don't think we really know just yet. Supposed to be better this year though.

He was great in HS but keep in mind he has yet to see the mound. The guy our staff was so high on last year was Eric Cerantola. He can do a lot with a baseball but right now all we know is two guys with huge potential.

We have some guns for the bullpen but again, freshmen and the Sec ain’t highschool. Will be interesting to see who emerges.

Well, LSU is always gonna have some hitters like MSU. I do think this year will be our best hitting team in a while. Like I said, the jury is out on pitching and I’m not sold yet. Hopefully we have the arms, then we could be very good.

If you're really interested, our new hitting coach is Eddie Smith. Here are some snippets from the local paper about his approach..
quote:

Smith believes a correlation exists between successful offensive teams and OPS. The percentage calculates a player’s ability to reach base and hit for power. Smith has emphasized walks — he titled one piece of paper “VALUE THE WALK!!!” — and extra-base hits since he arrived at LSU.

quote:

As he tries to increase walks, Smith has instructed hitters to chase fewer pitches. At the bottom of the corkboard, Smith split an at-bat into two scenarios: less than two strikes and two strikes. Smith asked players to look for their pitch and attack with fewer than two strikes. On the verge of a strikeout, he wanted players to battle.

I expect us to finish no lower than 2nd in the west. With Kjerstad and Martin returning and adding some new bats I expect us to score when we need to.
We have the best catcher in the SEC, so If DVH can find a solid Sunday starter we should be good on the mound.

Should be a grind and another great SEC West battle.

wouldn't shock me if anyone but Alabama (and maye Ole Miss) won the division, conference, or CWS. Just so many awesome teams, per usual

TigerLunatik, that’s actually not a bad approach. We’ve had a lot of success with that depending on bats. Jake Mangum was probably one of the best we ever had laying off a bad pitch. But then, his brain was freaky the way his eyes new so fast when to lay off at the last second. But we’ve had some teams with great success doing what your hitting coach is preaching. Make that pitcher work lol.

It may be unlikely but I do agree both Ole Miss and Alabama could pull it off. I hate Ole Miss but I could see them doing it before Bama. Having said that, I think Alabama is going to be a much tougher out this year than in recent years. They are going to be MUCH improved and will ruin someomes west title.

I think it will come down to Arkansas and MSU, with Auburn having an outside chance.

Idk it is college baseball. It is harder to predict with the limited info everyone has because not many programs care.

In a lot of respects non conference play is the preseason and conference play is regular season for me personally.

Mainly because I am too focused into March Madness to really care about early season baseball.

I start caring about baseball around March or April. Just depends on who State is playing.

But hey credit to yall for being hyped up about this early season baseball. I just could care less about Maine or Youngstown State when MSU Basketball has crucial games.

Man I am hype for Friday. Can’t wait for some baseball. This is the time of year my wife gets sports fatigue. Being a state fan it is women’s basketball ball twice a week, men’s basketball twice a week, baseball 3-5 times a week.

Our pitching should be really good with a deep bullpen, but I’m skeptical about our hitting

Our pen needs to be deep. The old "arm soreness" monster always seems to take out half the pen by the time SEC play starts.

We open with Wright State who won 40+ games last year and will be in the tournament. Then we play Oregon State the following weekend, who has two Omaha appearances and a natty in the last 3 years...and also knocked us out of Omaha one of those years, so huge rematch. If you're not excited about that, baseball probably just isn't for you.
