Everyone who watched that 1984 SEC season, which included me, as I was 15 and a diehard LSU fan, knew Florida was getting clobbered by the NCAA.
damn, who would admit to being this old?

Metro…you’re trying to win an argument. I’m not. I’m telling you as a as an observably sensible poster what happened. You can elect to believe me or not.
Vince was the AD from 79-04. He had the sign put up. He took the sign down as the AD. Vince Dooley’s decorating taste is not indicative of what the university does and doesn’t claim, because frankly universities don’t concern themselves with that stuff. It not like the university president called Vince and told him UGA’s position was to be this or that. He caught grief, primarily by the surviving members of the 42 team for the sign as well as the fanbase. And it came down.

I'm not trying to "win" anything. "I saw it!" isn't proof.

You want proof that the AD and head football coach had the sign put up and taken down?

Florida never "won" the SEC in 1984, and later had it vacated. They were ineligible before the season concluded.
UF also won the SEC on the field in '85 just for GP.
BTW, the Florida teams really didn't start winning until the 80s.

Claiming and Awarded are completely different. Anyone can claim something if it wasn’t AWARDED. Georgia in 1942 is an example. Does UGA have a legit claim to it? Yes. But just because you have a case does not mean it’s nationally recognized.
I'll talk to you. You, at least can have a conversation without twisting somebody's words.
You are correct. Claimining and Awarded is two different things. But we were the consensus champions in 1942. We were awarded the title by the majority of services that named/awarded titles. That is my whole point.
quote:Not sure what you mean...Nationally recognized. We were consensus champions. There were more services that thought we were champions than anyone else, so yes, we were and are nationally recognized. If your point is we did not participate in a title game, then all titles prior to 1992. Then you must argue with those who argue that if it was not a game between #1 and #2 do not count.
But just because you have a case does not mean it’s nationally recognized.
That would knock out 1994, 1996,1997. Point is this. There have always been a number of ways the country has named a national Title winner and a bunch of different methods have been used. Nobody can say definitively which method is the be all, do all.
Some say AP Poll. Some say BCS. Some say #1 vs. #2. You will have a multitude of differing opinions as to the correct method. But if the majority of selectors name a team National Champion, that is as legit as any other.

Muschamp - Sugar Bowl appearance
frick I hate sticking up for this guy, but Urban didnt leave because of health, he left because the team was a mess. The players on it were toxic and it wasnt very good anymore. Champ walked into a mess. Now he didnt help himself a ton.
then at Carolina, he walked into another mess. Should he be a HC in the SEC anytime soon? no, but some of his problems werent his fault.
