Few thoughts on the game last night. Still think UF is a 5-7 to 7-5 team and people are

overreacting. I was one of those, but after looking at the game again, don't see them being as bad as it looked.
Mertz doesn't have the ceiling of AR, but he doesn't have the floor of AR either. He's not as inaccurate as AR, but his inaccuracy does limit what UF can be at times. He kind of reminds me of Hurts at Bama in his first two seasons without the wheels. Jalen would complete passes, but often limit what those plays could be by under throwing it, throwing it behind his receivers so they'd have to adjust and get fewer yards on what could've been much more explosive plays. Mertz had several plays on the short passes where the ball was completed but not in a good spot to maximize the play.
He also completed a long pass for what could've been a TD, but instead of throwing the pass up and more to the center of the field allowing his WR to run under it, he instead threw it too short and to the boundary where the WR had no choice but to catch and run out of bounds. UF got no points on the possession.
I thought the D played pretty well overall. Utah only had one sustained TD drive. The others were a busted coverage or a short drive off of a turnover. Granted this was the third string QBs, but they played pretty well.
UF had chances to make this game closer but the ball didn't bounce their way or they simply didn't make the play on the ball when they had the opportunity. One pass should have been picked, but the Gator defender stuck one hand up and knocked it down instead of becoming the receiver on an underthrown pass.
Herbie blamed Mertz, but the receiver has got to react better and catch a ball that's hits him in the hands in stead of letting it get picked off of a carom.
The Oline looks bad, but olines tend to get better as the year goes along.
It is troublesome how many mistakes Napier makes in decision making considering he's been a head coach for several years now.
I don't know when I've last seen two player wearing the same number penalty.
This team could beat anyone on the schedule save Georgia, LSU and maybe FSU. I'm not saying they will win all of the other games, but they have enough talent if those other teams play a C game and Florida is B plus or better, they could beat them. Tough schedule, but they'll find a way to get two they won't be favored in and beat the cupcakes and Vandy at the very least.

Mertz was better than I expected. Run game was a mess. We have two very good backs and couldn't get a push. We have a couple of good receivers but we'll need more. TEs seemed to be stepping up a bit.
Defense was great minus the first play. Gave up 50 yards in the second half. Dline looked asleep first half but turned it around.
Coaching was the biggest issue last night. We threw away a lot of points.
Schedule is hard, but I think we'll be ok.

Florida should never have a record like this.
Cut bait move on

That is their ceiling. Napier is going to set the program back many, many more years. Best to fire him midseason after a few more of those no shows....
Good news? Easy Vegas bet on Utes for me. Thanks Florida for doing exactly as I expected. Horrible hire.

The issue is you pick another bad coach and it gets worse. Did people forget the post Fulmer years at Tennessee?

I'd say their best bet is to let him get some good recruiting classes in the next two years and if they're still a 6 to 8 win team, bring someone in that can coach the talent.

If your schedule is hard, and your coach is throwing away points (your words)- Florida will not be fine

The coaching needs to improve, but "fine" is a low bar for Florida these days. I'm talking making a bowl.

Yeah this is it. Zook fed Meyers teams. Muschamp fed McElwains and mullens first teams.
You have to recruit. Mullen stopped. Billy has a top 5 class now. If he keeps that up but can't win with them, he'll be gone.

Meyer, etc didn’t have the transfer portal to deal with though. Billy can “build-up” all the talent he wants, but if he gets fired next year, who knows how much of that talent sticks around for a different coach when we have unlimited bidding wars now for recruitment.

As long as UF is getting airtime it doesn't matter. To a kid all that matters is getting tape. If they're starting, 90% of them will stay. If they aren't, they'll move around.
The game is 100% about getting to the NFL now. We're just the suckers who pretend any of these kids care about the program.

Most people are laughing today, but this is still the truth.
Florida very easily could've won that game last night, which is both encouraging and maddening.

And Florida returned 1 starter from 2022 on defense, with just 3 returning starters on offense.
On the road against a top 15 team, its not an easy opener lol - regardless of whatever people on this board say.

JMO You must give a new Coach at least 4 years

Kyle Wittingham = good coach.
Billy = not good coach.
has nothing to do with "talent". sloppy is sloppy. penalties. absolutely no run game. offensive plays slow to get in (guess who calls plays for the gators). just not good football.
this may be a team to bet against during the season. the name "florida" carries weight, and may artificially inflate some point spreads. something to watch.

It’s worse than it looked Florida is such a small team the sec will destroy them
