I wonder who thought up the name Big 12 and how much they lacked foresight. They had the Pac 12 as a road map which previously went by the names Big Five, Big Six, Pacific-8, and Pacific-10.

Tell your dad he is forgetting about the Independents from those days like Notre Dame, Penn State, Pitt and Miami. They all won championships. ACC got one with Clemson and I'm talking about the 1970s and 1980s here.
