Your definition of forever could use some work. Pat Dye was built by BAMA. His assistant coaches were raised by BAMA. The offense he ran was a carbon copy of BAMA. His defense was a carbon copy of what he learned at BAMA.
You can say that the barn was the early composition of today's Georgia. Just no championships.
And championships matter. That just makes him a poor imitation.

The SugarVols in 1985. The depleted Vols were a TD plus dog to Miami (coached by Jimmy Johnson QB Venny Testarede). Vols QB Daryl Dickey (yep he was a Tennessee QB) led the Vols in a 35-7 rout of the Hurricanes.
That game is often looked at the game that put the Vols back on the map and kicked off the 1985-2005 run for the Vols.

They don't give out NC trophies for that. If Pat Dye was really the heir apparent to coach Paul "Bear" Bryant" and the mighty Tide in the 80s where are the NC trophies? Truth is, he did less with more.
And I sat in Legion Field in 1992 on Thanksgiving Day, I watched BAMA dismantle Pat Dye's last barner team 17-0. They were headed to major NCAA penalties and he was being replaced................................ and BAMA?
Well BAMA was headed to New Orleans and the Sugar Bowl to play Miami for the natty. Remember how that went?
The only NC rings Pat Dye and his staff ever wore had a Crimson A on them.

The fact that Auburn wasn't awarded the 1983 national championship is the reason using national championships pre-1998 as a barometer for success is a bit silly. It was part-merit, part-popularity contest.

Thems the rules. And all that Pat Dye left the barn of real significance was his signature on the football field.

And yet in 2003 the AP poll and the BCS couldn't agree on who the National Champion was.
Turns out that both LSU and USC won.

I think as programs ebb and flow, you have games that “make” your program, but on a temporary basis. Unless your program has been without a down year, that’s going to be true.
LSU was “made” at some point under Dietzel. Then under Saban (or maybe Dinardo) And will hopefully have one under Kelly.

That's weird, I don't recall USC playing the Sugar Bowl that season (the designated BCS title game).

I remember LSU beating Oklahoma and holding up the crystal football. I remember the only thing USC celebrated on the field was the Rose Bowl trophy.
