He quit because of the idiot AD and his son in bad health.

5 of the last 7 Auburn head coaches have either won an SEC title or had an undefeated season.

Surely this thread was not started by an Ole Miss fan criticizing past Auburn head coaches and their level of success.

How was it bogus? Blakeney admitted to it. Auburn was clearly guilty.

And 4 of them went undefeated and won SEC championships. When’s the last time Ole Miss won an SEC championship or went undefeated?

Before my time, but wasn't Stallings "forced" to retire?

No. He quit because Sorensen (prez) and Bockrath (AD) were micromanaging. Supposedly Sorensen would go so far as to come into the locker room and question coaching decisions so Stallings said F this and went home.

He won 10 games, won the west for the second time in the last 3 years, and went to the SECCG the year he retired. Nobody was going to force him anywhere.

He had to admit it, Ramsey had it all on tape.

Auburn was 100% guilty, but it was a shakedown. Ramsey was married with a kid. He sold them a sob story about needing money to take care of his family. IIRC some of the benefits were steaks and such. He was recording them the whole time, probably to ensure the gravy trail never stopped. Later on, he said the whole thing was his then-wife’s idea.

It’s been a long time, but wasn’t Donald Watkins involved as well?

No, he understood the job was going to become a lot more difficult with the sanctions

The sanctions were over when he quit. The had been lifted in 1995 after Alabama successfully appealed the Langham case.

Timeline here

Fran is the coach that left because he found out the sanctions for DuBose/Means were going to be draconian, and he wasn’t wrong. That’s why Bama fans should always appreciate Mike Shula. He took the job when nobody else would touch it and did as good as could have been expected under the circumstances.

And made his car payments and gave actual cash.

It was old school “take care of your people” stuff that everyone probably did back in the day but he was dealing with a snake and it was still very much against the rules.

He had to retire or he was going to beat Bob Bockrath to death

Yep. He was tied up in it.

As an Alabama fan it’s all fun and games to crack on Auburn, but the truth is Ramsey was a real POS.

Can you really count a guy who never coached a game and didn’t get his buyout because his dumbass never signed his contract?

He really is. In Blakeney's defense, he honestly thought he was helping one of his players that really needed it but then find out it all a hustle and a setup.
