Not a big deal to me, but you are telling a Catholic Hospital that connecting Jesus with Christmas (something that is accurate and factual) is potentially offensive enough to some that you won't take their money for ad space.

By itself, it isn't a big deal, but the underlying condition of an overly sensitive population will likely become a big deal soon.

You're right. Anyone who gets too up in arms about it on either side needs to get a life. I personally find it petty but it won't keep me from watching ESPN, or any other channel that has the same policy as long as they have programming I like.

Most people will probably forget about it by tomorrow.

Now, why you gotta say that when I gave you props earlier.

ESPN is a business. Like ALL businesses, ESPN exists SOLELY to make MONEY!!!

Ad makes them make LESS money? -- No workie workie.

HUGE group of Christian zealots get offended by ESPN's decision? ESPN sees potential loss of viewers who = money? -- ESPN changes position.

Key factor in both decisions above?

M---O---N---E---Y!!!

If saying PRAISE ALLAH will make ESPN more money, ESPN will say PRAISE ALLAH!!!

Well, if you really want to get into it, "Christmas" was around long before christianity in the form of pagan and other celebrations centered around the winter solstice. It was just adopted and used by the church later.

But, that's another discussion. ;)

To be fair, there are lots of other religions it can be argued that the legend of the birth of Christ was just piecemealed off of. The three wise men, Mary, etc... I mean I'm not sure you can explicitly say that that part is factual.

I agree.

My point is more about society being so overly sensitive as to even make this an issue for ESPN.

The ad was innocuous, but because of where we are as a society ESPN was concerned someone somewhere might be offended by it. In worrying so much about those who might be offended by something so innocuous, they offended a large group of viewers.

The questions are, why did ESPN think showing the ad would offend people and why didn't they understand that not showing it would offend people?

That wasn't part of the ad. What I was saying was factual is that Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus. Whether the Jesus who is/was being celebrated actually existed or the stories regarding his birth that are commonly told are factual wasn't the point.

The point was Jesus and Christmas are by definition connected to one another.

It wasn't Christmas though.

And called Christmas.

I'm not here to argue for or against the accuracy or truth of Christianity. Like you said, that is another discussion for another time.

My prediction was that Alabama would need at least 45 if they stood any chance of winning. Somehow they did. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while.

Probably for the same reason they thought the Longhorn Network was a good idea.

The answer is, that as Christians are the poorest citizens, and receive a disproportionately large amount of welfare probably in the name of Jesus, that they are just less educated and tend to be less intelligent. That's why they knew it would offend them to not show it. Scrooster can agree, I would guess.
