Dead last in the conference in defense = $5 million per year.

I honestly feel bad for aggy. They were in a real catch 22, because if they don't pony up the money Sumlin would have gone to USC. On the other hand, if they call his bluff they are looking for another coach at the same time as Texas, with no Manziel or Evans and one of the worst defenses in college football.

It's hard to believe this topic has 11 pages of posts. This quote sums it up. Has Sumlin "earned" $5 mil. per year? Absolutely not. Sumlin is getting paid because A&M is anticipating he is the guy to make A&M an elite program. It's a gamble, but it's obviously a gamble A&M feels like they had to make to have a shot of competing in the SEC.

Okay. So what exactly has Sumlin earned? If teams have the money, and he's in demand by multiple teams, why hasn't he earned it? This is a big time business.

That's the biggest legitimate knock on Sumlin, and it is a real concern. But he is recruiting the hell out of the defensive side of the ball and played a TON of true freshmen this year. Our defense will improve significantly.

I think USC offering Sumlin $6 million is complete and utter bullshite and will be proven to be so.

Sumlin is 19-6 over his two seasons at A&M. His name has been linked in reports to the vacant Southern Cal gig. Hyman said he hasn’t been contacted by other programs concerning Sumlin but added “they don’t do that anymore” in terms of the process.

Guaranteed? When? Next year? The year after? What positions will step up? Did anyone on the defense improve this year? Sumlin has no history of good defense as a head coach.

There isn't much question Sumlin was getting interest from other programs and the NFL. A&M had a choice to either pay him or likely lose him. While $5 mill may sound like a lot it really isn't, not with where the market is going and not with the kind of money A&M has to spend.

A&M absolutely could not afford to lose Sumlin right now for a number of reasons. It would be a huge step backward.

Yes, next year. Our defense was pretty good last year, though not great.

I look at relatively new coaches like NFL draft picks. They are paying for the player's potential. I don't think A&M would be paying 5 min for 3rd and 4th place in the West for the extended future.

If you accept the premise that recruiting is the lifeblood of a program, and you also accept the premise that recruiting rankings, in the aggregate, are indicative of success, then why would someone look at our defensive recruiting classes in 2013, 2014, and 2015, and not think the defesne will improve significantly? And even if you are just a swamp kitten that thinks Sumlin can't develop talent, you can't think the opposite isn't a perfectly valid opinion as well.

lets see...8-4 this year, gonna probably go 7-5 or so next year. yeah, sounds like money well spent. almost as good as spending 500 million to fix up your dump of a stadium when you could have built a brand new domed stadium for less. sounds like you guys have a strong economics program out there.

Again, why is this 5 million dollar figure some sort of ungodly figure? I don't understand. 5 million is what it took for A&M to get the best coach available to it, the one it already had. If A&M could get Saban for $10 million, I'm sure it would have, but as it stood the, market value for Sumlin is what it is. Nothing exists in a vacuum. It isn't like any wage is based solely on some sterile comparison of how all coaches would perform at all jobs, and even scaled from top to bottom based on an accurate earnings ratio for that wage. He earned it because he got us to sign it. That is as far as the concept of "earning" goes.

8-4 with JFF & Mike Evans playing backyard football?

I'm waiting to see how they do when the 2 of them leave. It'll be a rough year.

Holy shite. How the frick can you pay KSumlin more than Miles. It's astounding.

I agree, A&M had to pay the money or someone else probably would have. So, he is worth the money in that sense. A&M wouldn't have paid more than what they thought was needed to keep him there. I was looking at it solely in terms of what he has accomplished so far at A&M.

He's got a better winning percentage against Saban and Ole Miss than Miles does, maybe that has something to do with it.

And as a function of how much A&M is able to pay a coach, why has he not earned it?

Les Miles has the second highest win% in sec history. Higher than saban's and spurrier's. Get a clue.
