I generally agree, but it would still be unpopular for VT to leave UVa first. UVa definitely won't get left out in the cold, you're right about that. I do think it will be tremendously difficult for the SEC to get either UNC or UVA. Those two will do whatever it takes to stick together. They have a long-standing relationship and very similar interests. They both, especially UVA, view the SEC as an inferior academic conference. UVA and UNC alumni I know generally look down on the SEC, whether that's fair or not. VT and NC State is the likely option for the SEC, IMO
I think that some folks may be overstating the SEC's willingness to expand in the short term. Getting to 14 has been a tough adjustment--going to 16 so soon would be cataclysmic. Slive has got enough on his plate without adding this problem.

What the SEC would really like, in my opinion, is to simply keep the Big Ten from taking UNC and UVA off the table and forcing a move by the SEC. Since UNC and UVA apparently want to keep the ACC in tact, the simple way for the SEC to get what it wants is to simply let UNC and UVA know that, as long as they don't accept a Big Ten offer, there is a place for them in the SEC if the ACC falls apart. However, if either of them leave for the Big Ten, the SEC will be forced to offer their in-state rival a position in the SEC.

UVA actually has the next move--the Big Ten has stuck to their paramater of only adding contiguous states--without UVA, UNC is not in play. The folks at UVA would be crazy to jump to the Big Ten if that meant having Va. Tech in the SEC. They are already losing the battle to Va. Tech as it is--if Va. Tech goes SEC, they will get annihilated, and the damage might not be limited to the athletic field. Having UVA go with the Big Ten would really throw gas on the NOVA/rest of the state split. It would be a stupid move, politically.

There's no question that the SEC would enable VT to totally dominate UVA in football. I'm not sure how it would expand to other sports or beyond the athletic field though.

I also think you're misrepresenting UVA as the school of NOVA. Richmond/Tidewater are pretty pro-UVA. NOVA is more associated with schools like Georgetown, George Mason, and JMU.

This would also be what I think the SEC should do.

Due to Vick, their football success, and shire size and state/out of state ratio compared to UVA, Tek is pretty much team of front runners and non-alumni in Virginia. The non-alumni UVA fan pretty much does not exist this generation. The UVA admin isn't stupid, if they went to the Big 10 and Tek to the SEC, it would be pretty much the end of their football program, and probably basketball. That's why they are willing to stand pat until FSU and Clemson makes their moves.

Seriously I predicted Rutgers and Maryland to the B1G over a year ago. Do I not get a medal or something?

I understand how VT would be even more at an advantage if they joined the SEC but whats all this they would dominate UVA? VT hasn't lost to UVA since 2003 and that was the only time they have lost to the Cavs this century. Not to mention VT came into the ACC in 2004 and has won more ACC titles in that time than UVA has in its entire history.

eta: Point is, I think they're doing just fine at dominating UVA already.

Not recruiting Michael Vick was the worst decision in the history of the UVA football program

Would be perfect. Make it happen now.

I'd take NC State over Duke though. Once Coach K is gone, who really gives a frick about Duke anymore? No one, that's who.
