The south side of Chicago and Memphis are very similar. Hell, they even look alike and have a lot of the same street gangs. Ditto for St Louis. The overall life experience is hardly different at all in these places. The people wear the same clothes, eat the same food, shop at the same stores, listen to the same music, watch the same television shows, go to the same types of churches, etc. Capitalism and technology have homogenized the nation. You yankees are talking about the South like it is still 1950 or something.

I hear that down on the Mississippi Delta it really is like going back to the 1950's.

...and hardly anybody lives in the Delta. I suspect most people in Mississippi live around Memphis and Jackson or the Gulf Coast near New Orleans.

Not even close. 47% of the US population is located on the East Coast.

I believe you are right. I always hear Southaven, MS just across the line from Memphis is the third biggest city in Mississippi. I would guess Jackson is first and Gulfport or Biloxi is second.

The majority of black people who live in Chicago are from the Memphis/Mississippi Delta/Southern Arkansas/Northeast Louisiana region, so there are some similarities.

Actually it's not even close but the other way around. According to the latest U.S. Census figures (2012), the population numbers are as follows:

South - 114,000,000

Northeast - 56,000,000

The "East Coast" is not a census designated region and never has been.

You say that here. But you'd protest if I said this in regards to Chicago's gunplay problems, I suspect.

It's true that most AAs in the North have family roots in the South -- especially in the Great Migration destination cities (Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, etc). But the kids who grow up in those cities have vastly different realities/experiences than most AAs in the South. Similarities? Sure. A 100% shared culture? No.

True but a lot of stereotypical black things are actually southern

Texas has 26 million. Florida has nearly twenty million. Those two states are why the South is the most populous region of the US.

Not to mention that Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia are all more populous than every Northeastern state other than New York along with Texas and Florida and it isn't even close.

It is bizarre how some yankees think the South is still a poor, largely rural, agriculture area. I guess media fueled stereotypes have brainwashed them into believing this. The South is in fact the most populous and fastest growing region of the nation and that has been true for a while now.

If the figures quoted above about population are correct, then the south is being royally screwed by the electoral college. And btw, Florida ain't in the south.

Where is Florida? The Northwest? I must have map dyslexia or something.

As defined by the United States Census Bureau, the Southern region of the United States includes sixteen states. As of 2010, an estimated 114,555,744 people, or thirty-seven percent of all U.S. residents, lived in the South, the nation's most populous region.
