It's more competitive now than it was then, so yes imo

Already has IMO. Probably blasphemous to some but I really think he has.

Idk but I can't wait until Saban tattoos are commonplace like the terrible Bear ones.

True. But everyone was competing with the same rules, and it's not like Bryant was competing against chumps. Many of these coaches were in their primes when he was in his:

Bo Schembechler
Woody Hayes
John McKay
Barry Switzer
Tom Osborne
Darrell Royal
Joe Paterno
Ara Parseghian
Lou Holtz
Bob Devaney
Dan Devine

Yes, and hopefully Nick decides to "go out on top" and retire as a result.

I'm not one to jump to defend the Bear, but it's amazing how much the game evolved during his time at Alabama. One platoon football, wishbone, integration, modern recruiting, etc, etc.. People under 40 would probably not even recognize the sport if they traveled back in time and became a cfb fan in the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Bear wasn't an innovator. He was just so naturally good at the fundamental essence of coaching that everybody else would change/evolve. And then he would adjust and still beat their asses.

Saban really hasn't dealt with that imo. Bigger stage, more money, more media...yes. But the product was effectively finished when Saban arrived in the SEC. And what innovations we have seen - eg, dual threat QBs running a spread offense - he has struggled with.

Saban would have earned 5 NCs in a faster time sprthan Bear I do believe.

Not to mention more parity now.

Why don't you listen to Finebaum and you'll hear all about that during the show. That's all people talk about

Great post. Most probably dont realize that Bryant totally ditched an offensive system that had won him multiple SEC and National Titles to adopt the wishbone and then won multiple titles with that offense.

Wade and Thomas built the foundation, Bryant built the house, Saban just renovated it and put in a swimming pool.

Define "struggled." The guy wins almost all his games, wins conference titles, and plays for and wins national titles in this era you are referring to. A two year window without a natty (while losing three total games and s conference title) is struggling?

Since Saban has been a player/coach (since 1972) he's seen the game shift from a run dominated game to a pass heavy game. Say what you will about he likes to be run heavy but the game of football itself has made that transition. 1975 NCAA records set in rushing attempts (51.9) and yards (204.5) per game. It is the height of the veer/wishbone era and the top six finishers in Heisman voting are running backs. 1982 For the first time, teams average more passing than rushing yards. A rule change allows the ball to become smaller than ever before, aiding the passing game. 2006 Offense drops 8.5% from the previous 5-year average as the NCAA institutes a new rule starting the clock earlier on kickoffs and changes of possession. The rule is changed in 2007 and offenses quickly recover.2008 The 40-second play clock, started immediately after a play is blown dead, paves the way for real up-tempo football. From 2008 to 2012, total offense across NCAA football increased by an average of 8.9 yards per year, more than three times the average increase (2.45 yards) over the previous 35 years.

Thats kind of a different question. Greatest coach ever vs greatest Alabama coach. Bryant still has the second but I think Saban might have the first with another title.
