Direct evidence playing in a horrid conference hurts teams last night

Duke looked utterly unprepared to deal with real game pressure as thing started crumbling around them - similar to Kentucky, Kansas and Clemson games. If they play in the SEC they probably have 7-8 more games like that and, while likely losing a few, get much more comfortable and confident in those situations. Instead they are learning on the fly in a national semifinal and failing.

Iron sharpens iron.

And freshmen don't win in March.

2 old as hell cliches that once again prove true.

But learning how to close out right games in an absolute skill. But I've seen teams progressively get better at end of game pressure situations. Not surprised that an some grizzled vets on Houston's squad were able to stay tough and pull off the comeback.

Cooper Flagg is a hell of a player and Duke has a good team. However, just like the NBA, basketball is a game dominated by veteran players and coaches. There's something about the lights getting brighter in March that causes younger teams to fold, and that's what happened to Duke last night. They only made one field goal in the last ten and a half minutes of the game.

I agree with op and yes iron sharpens iron. You can never simulate in practice those crunch time moments. I said in these forums, I didn’t expect Duke to win it all because very rarely do freshmen lead a team to a title (Anthony Davis and Carmelo to name a few)

But I do think playing in tough games in football can hurt your team. Those brutal wars wear you out and your star player can get injured like UGA. I firmly believe Ohio state won because they didn’t have to play in the B1G title game.

Yes I agree. I don't think this applies to football like it does to baseball and basketball. You need a few tough games in football so you can figure out your strengths and weaknesses against good teams but not repetitive games because of the physical wear and tear.

No. They can stay in high school the full time. But he's good enough to star in D1. He'll get an extra year of NBA salary, which in his case could be a $30-40 million difference in career earnings. For him, it's a no brainer. But if a player isn't ready to complete physically, a reclass may not be beneficial.

Contrast that to next year. Duke will look utterly different.

It was the Final Four. You don’t think the first 2 weekends prepared them?

Rush to the NBA? Luka Doncic became a pro at 15. Basketball money is crazy money. Flagg will make a billion dollars in the next decade. You can’t turn that type of money down.

Plus Scheyer has an entire new crew of one and drones coming in next season. Flagg has to move on to make space. They have four 5 stars joining next year and a possible 5th. But those guys will be inexperienced like this year, so can they win it all next year? Calipari 2.0

I like my best freshman ever to win an NC.

Real talk, Auburn aside (I thought they had enough to cross the line) the NC feels like right now it’s the two most well-rounded teams in the tournament. Good depth, quality on both sides of the ball.

Nope, I don’t think the season prepared them for the onslaught of the Houston Cougars in crunch time. You have to experience failure first hand to prepare you the next time. You have to have your heart ripped out to understand the moment in front of you.

Duke beat Auburn and totally fricking swatted Alabama.

It’s the NCAA basketball tournament. They blew a lead late and Houston is also a great team. This is just anecdotal bullshite to make you feel better as an SEC homer.

Yeah it’s the final four. They played plenty of adequate teams, they just blew them out. Houston is a final four team, and a pretty good team maybe the better team just won.

I disagree. Experience is the mother of all learning and I don’t think Duke had been in that situation much. Not just the players but the coach too. Sampson outcooached Schuyer down the stretch. It was very evident. Change coaches in crunch time and Duke wins that game easily.
