Fulmer ruined fulmers legacy by what he did to get the job.
This correct! Half of the Vols faithful don't view Fulmer favorably. The other half views him favorably -- at varying levels.
The old guard knows that he stabbed Majors in the back to steal the job. He was only able to build the team in the 90s due to the academic assistance program that a faculty member exposed. With this program, he was able to bring in dumb-as-rocks athletes and keep them eligible.

Phil stepped in as AD to prevent the prior AD from hiring of Mike Leach. Then runs to get Pruitt. As AD, he shows up at practices with a whistle while wearing coaching shorts. Oversees rouge football operation. Worship at your own risk.

The Vols worship Fat Phil.
He's their Buddha. They have a statue of him in their home and rub his belly and at Christmas they lay Krispy Kreme donuts at his feet

It's NOT a coincidence that the UT athletic department flourished after the cancer (Fulmer) was removed entirely.

His legacy for the older fans was already hurt, the Pruitt hire and results took it down further. As a coach he inherited a well oiled machine and somehow set us up for one of the worst stretches in Tennessee football.
