This. Back then juniors were not considered.

While it didn't happen often, juniors did occasionally win before 1971.

Yeah you do know Pat only beat him by 152 points right? That's not that big of a margin.

Marinaro would have never won the Heisman. At the time he was a sentimental vote. He played for Cornell for goodness sake. I bet you think Chuck Long deserved it over Bo also.

Ed was only in it because it was a down year for candidates. All about timing right?

And? You do know that 1971 was before the NCAA split the divisions and they were considered "Major College" just like Auburn?

Nope. It blows my mind that that was the closest vote until Ingram.

Just to be fair, Chuck Long was pretty fricking awesome. He just had his Heisman season the wrong year.

Brad Banks should have won over Carson Palmer and Shonn Greene should have won too. My Hawkeyes always getting screwed for the Heisman

I think Sullivan was a great quarterback and he still carries himself with class. I wish Terry Beasley could have won the heisman though. I'm not sure that anyone has ever played with more heart than he did.

My dad always said Beasley should have won a Heisman. He said he was like Evans catching all those prayers that JFF would throw up. Sometimes Pat would just throw the ball as far as he could, and Beasley would jump over everyone and catch it.

Pat Sullivan...

Playing against white people...(downgraded)

Love how today's SEC crowd - forgets the SEC before 1975...and thinks it was awesome. The conference had an abysmal out of conference record from 1960-1972...including the flagship Alabama - who couldn't seem to beat anyone out of the South

It was considered the weakest of all major conferences...for good reason.

SEC was the Big East of today.

Things have obviously changed today - but back then the Big10 was King...along with the SW and Pac-10.

Kinda hard to make that claim, seeing as how the conference only permitted one team to play a bowl each year.

It was a two-team league for most of the period you cited (1960-72). The winner of Ohio State-Michigan would play in Rose, the loser (and the other 8 teams) would stay home. Hell, Michigan won over 90% of their games in the five years from 1970—74, and went bowling only once. And in '73, when they both came in to their rivalry undefeated with identical 10-0 records and ended in a tie (tOSU got the Rose bid), combined they had faced only three teams that finished above .500 in those 20 games.

Granted, the SEC wasn't all that in those segregated days - but the Big 10 was probably weaker overall than they are now.

Not really. Everybody knows that Mark Ingram clearly did not deserve a Heisman, but nobody gets mad about it. That dude was is obviously very upset about Pat Sullivan's Heisman in a way that seems personal.

It's already been established in this thread that back then the Heisman was a career achievement award given to seniors. Not the joke it is today that was given to Ingram.

Screwed might be a strong word. that was a different time. Freshmen didnt play varsity ball, and the Heisman typically went to a senior.

Why coz he's got an opinion? I never thought he looked like a hiseman either. Just your average quarterback

Then why exactly were the words, "Heisman" and "AJ McCarron" ever used in the same sentence?

It was an absolute embarrassment that Ingram won the Heisman. Suh should have won it in a landslide.

Except he should never have won it in 1971.

He was better in 1970. That season would've made more sense than winning it over Johnny Musso or Greg Pruitt in '71.
