Thirty-four have produced at least one Heisman winner. The most prominent program still without a Heisman would probably be Tennessee.

Can someone give me a reason as to why Charles Woodson didn't deserve the Heisman over Manning in 1997?

Noone can tell me what Woodson did in 97 trumped Mannings 3800 yds and 37 td passes.

Manning couldnt beat Florida. Michigan won the title. Not that woodson is better but i would say thats why.

Valid argument in hindsight, but the Heisman is awarded before bowl games.

Look at the Tennessee/South Carolina game stats that year. This is the sole reason Manning did not win. Thanks to Jamal Lewis.

Woodson was considered a big game player for a national championship caliber team while Manning never beat Florida. It might not be fair but it is what it is. And the Heisman trophy has always been a popularity contest that's very biased towards the big market teams like a Michigan, Ohio State, USC, Notre Dame and the like.

I think another reason Manning lost was because they didn't want to see back to back SEC players win the Heisman.

No...Tennessee's defense couldn't stop Florida's offense from going up and down the field at will.

It's like when Johnny Majors finished second in voting to a ND running back whose team went 3-8

Mannings numbers vs. UF were pretty good. Chavis couldnt figure out how to stop Steve's offense till '98.

This might have been reason #1. ESPN was running Woodson's Heisman campaign as well. Wuerrful and Manning had very similar stats in their senior seasons.

Let's also be honest that much of the shock about Manning not winning the Heisman is in retrospect because he's become simply legendary in the NFL. Had he faded away like Ryan Leaf there would not be as much bitching.

considering how often the Heisman goes to a name QB who doesn't deserve it... and how rarely a player who plays defense gets serious consideration

It is ironic as hell the one year a guy who played defense wins it... it might have gone to the wrong guy

Manning and Tebow are two of the best college players ever. Manning definitely deserved it. I mean if you are going to give it to a defensive player for the only time ever, don't do it in the year that one of the best QB's ever is up for the award. Give it to a defensive guy when Troy Smith is contending for it.

well everyone knew michigan was playing for a split title and UT wasnt. + i think the UF cloud hung over manning rather you blame him or chavis. the guy was a labeled choker until he finally won an NFL Playoff game

Mm, not quite. UT had the possibility of playing for an outright national championship if Michigan was to lose the Rose Bowl.

well ok..i was only 11 at the time so i was going off of too much memory. but i still think the fact michigan was undefeated was a HUGE factor

...by ESPN pundits to get Woodson votes AND by haters in general when we pretty much dominated everyone besides UF. I remember he ended the streak @ Legion Field in resounding fashion, I also remember UGA fans gator chomping us during our nine year streak over them. It was pathetic.

Fulmer's arse was always tight vs. UF.
