If he hadn't left Alabama when he did, then Alabama might not have been looking for a coach precisely four years later, which was the same time when Nick Saban was looking to leave the Miami Dolphins.
But then again, if you get into those hypotheticals, you can argue similar things for arguably any of Alabama's post-Bear Bryant coaches. I.e. if Mike Dubose hadn't done poorly enough to get fired after precisely the 2000 season, then Dennis Franchione wouldn't have gotten hired and then left two years later, and then Mike Price wouldn't have gotten hired and fired before he actually coached a game, and then Mike Shula wouldn't have gotten hired and then fired after four seasons, and then Alabama wouldn't have been looking for a coach when Saban was looking to leave the Dolphins.
And that's not really a reason to let a coach into the CFB Hall of Fame.
