I guess my only question is ... if you're trying to prevent a big play and are willing to accept the penalty, why just run 1 guy out there? Why not run 11 more guys out? It's the same penalty.

because the ref can throw a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct any time he wants.. and that would be 15 yards.. and put them in FG range

In the last 2 minutes of each half, when there is a penalty for 12 men on the field, the clock is adjusted back to the time before the play started.
The same goes for defensive holding. Teams have done the bear hug to every receiver to run time and essentially eliminate a chance at the end zone. The Saints did this to the 49ers a while back at the end of the half and forced a field goal instead of two end zone shots.

Lanning is a good coach, but he definitely gives off Kiffin vibes.

Smart? Day?

Bert at Wisconsin did something similar against Penn State back when JoePa was still there. I think there was a rule change the previous offseason that allowed the clock to run during a kickoff as soon as the ball had been kicked. So after scoring with like 10 seconds left in the first half, Bert had the entire ST unit run offsides on the kickoff and smother the returner. Drained five seconds off the clock. Penalty accepted, then they did it AGAIN. Offsides, smother the returner, and at that point the clock had run out. JoePa was pissed
I had no problem with it just as I had no problem with Lanning's call. What transpired was exactly how the rulebook is written. It was a brilliant strategy.
I suppose I would care if it were like pee wee football or something. But these are P5 coaches making millions of dollars. If they're smart enough to find the loophole and exploit it, more power to em.
