there is no such thing as a perfect system.
that's why i'm so glad we have nick fricking saban as our coach... we are bad arse... it's legit.. and no matter if we win or lose, people hate playing us.

wrong. if we had been in auburn's position in 2004, we'd have been shunned too. believe it or not... that's the damn truth. there IS some semblance of a system they have to follow.
the two top ranked teams remained undefeated all season and they were both money maker schools. we'd have suffered the same sequence of events that auburn did.
Completely disagree. We would more than likely have jumped Oklahoma at some point late in the season in the human polls. Remember 2005 when the same discussions were happening around USC, Texas and Alabama prior to the LSU game and we were number three in the nation. I remember the ESPN talking heads saying that Alabama would probably end up jumping Texas in the computer polls if we won our last three games including the SECGC due to strength of schedule which was still a big part of the BCS rankings at that time. (Of course we didn't so it's water under the bridge.)

We all know what an experienced and offensive master-mind Lane Kiffin is, don't we?

no way to know... i know it's all about money, and i know we'd pull in more money than Auburn... but one game is not what the whole thing is about to them, it's a sustained, long term money maker. if people realize their system is super ill-legit like you propose, then they lose money because people don't care about who wins.
people have to believe in how the system works. if the PEOPLE agree that the winner of a said system is the real champion, then money can flow.

Bill Plaschke is the douche w/ a lisp on Around the Horn ... a USC homer, Petey Carroll fellator. No love lost for Auburn, but if they win I guess it wouldn't be so bad to shut up oxygen sniffing, wine spritzer sipping light loafers like this fruit.

It's not a pride thing IMO as it is a history thing. The system, right or wrong, (admittedly mostly wrong) is about maintaining the old guard. It's the same reason Notre Dame, which I hate, gets a free shot at a National Title if it goes undefeated or a BCS game if it finishes in the top 8 even though it plays a joke schedule. Alabama rides a big wave of national recognition from the 60's and 70's, something other schools simply don't have.
A buddy of mine put it in a really interesting way. What if you replace Boise St. and TCU with an undefeated Notre Dame and Ohio State at three and four this year. With that, ask yourself this question, does the NCAA give Cam Newton an emergency overnight free pass vs. Alabama or does it take it's good 'ole sweet NCAA time, let Auburn sit him out and avoid all the bad press?

undefeated non-AQ + Oregon with one loss while being ranked higher + Alabama with one loss ranked behind them = non-AQ/Oregon national championship. With no chance of Bama jumping Oregon if SEC perceived power is diluted.

When it comes to turning out NFL players, at the start of this season, the SEC averaged 26 active pros per program and the Pac-10 averaged 22 pros, but the Pac-10 continually dominates the depth charts at the most important position ? quarterback.

There is so much wrong with Plaschke's article that I don't know even where to begin. I will start on a small note: The 3 best quarterbacks in the NFL call Tennessee, Purdue, and Michigan their alma mater.

SEC not performing in bowl games this season is not helping matters....
