The next season 1953-1954 UK went 25-0 and were SEC champions but declined the NCAA bid. The three stars graduated at Christmas and were eligible for SEC but not the NCAA. My dad always blamed Bernie Shively for not knowing the rules since he was on the rules committee.
Without Cliff Hagan, Frank Ramsey and Lou Tsiroupolous the Cats decided to decline the bid.

Yes to LMC. No to Brookings, kinda. It was around in later years but probably not the same. I was a teenager when it closed I believe. It’s sounds extreme but my grandfather was born in 1896, served in WW1, and I’m only 49.

Random small world fact…Cliff Hagan’s sister lives next to my mother. In their 90’s now I believe.

She told me OP asked her to get rid of it, but she was so unimpressed with his performance that she didn’t see the point and ignored the request until I came along.

Popular place back in the day. Now it is ghetto on that road, and not a place to be late night. I think Charlies is still in business and you can still smell that plant down the street over about 1/2 of the town. W T got his start there as it was his wife's (her father) business. W T sold it to Proctor & Gamble and he did pretty well with the proceeds.

I don’t go anywhere near Winchester Road. Have stayed clear of that general area for the better part of 30 years.

Are you old enough to remember the original Tolly Ho (old red brick squeezed behind Kennedy's bookstore) that was razed for that parking structure?
Saratoga in CC? (gone)
Embers on Winchester? (gone)
Continental on NC? (gone)
Original McDonald's down the street from Continental? (still there but no longer a McDonals in this century)
Parkette? (gone)
Former mayor's burger joint on NC Road next to Golden Corral? (still going but those 25 cent burgers are no longer 25 cents)
Buffalo & Dads? (gone)
The all you can eat place next door to B&D? (gone)

I definitely remember Saratoga, TollyHo, Continental (crazy memories there once it turned into a shady “entertainment complex” and certainly Parkette.
Basically anything from the late 70’s on to a certain extent. Been here my whole life. My earliest non-youth childhood memories are the original Fayette Mall, Champs on Polumbo, and the Darryl’s on Nicholasville Road for some reason.

That seems to be the correct time for the break from old (local) Lexington and new (chains / big box) so you got lucky there.

That was like the "go to" new place when it opened and the twin cinema in that complex mate it the "date night" thing.
Frische's in Idle Hour went long ago but not the one on Harrodsburg is gone to.
:(

My parents were the silent generation and still were immersed in old school Lexington, so I still hit most of the old local places that were still around for a bit.

Crossroads, and later South Park next door, is where I saw every great movie from Star Wars all the way through Jurassic Park.
